Why Are My Glasses Slipping Off My Face? What Can I Do About It?
Why Are My Glasses Slipping Off My Face? What Can I Do About It?
If you wear glasses, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of your glasses sliding down your face. Why does this happen, and is there any way to fix it? Yes! Read on to learn about the most common causes of slipping glasses, and a few suggestions on how to address this issue.
- Loose Or Worn-Out Hinges
First, check the hinges of your glasses. These are located where the temple joins the rest of the frame. Often, loose glasses are caused by the screws in the hinge loosening over time with shock, vibration, and regular wear.
Using an eyeglass repair kit, you can tighten these screws to adjust the hinges. This may be enough to restore your glasses and ensure they fit properly. However, some hinges may simply be too damaged to repair.
- Improperly-Adjusted Nose Pads
If your glasses have nose pads, you may want to push them inward if your glasses are sliding down your nose. The closer together the nose pads are, the higher the glasses will sit on your face – and vice versa.
You can usually adjust the nose pads on your own by just pushing them gently, but you can also take your glasses to a local optical shop and have them do it for you, usually for free or for a nominal fee.
- Bent Temples
The temples are the part of the glasses that sit on your ears. Over time, they tend to bend outward, becoming wider and looser. Put your glasses down on a table. Look at the temples from above.
Are they aligned? Is one side sticking out more than the other? Do they both look like they’re splaying outward? If you think the temples are bent, you can bend them back.
You can do this on your own with metal frames. But if your frames are acetate or plastic, go to an optical shop. The glasses should be professionally heated and adjusted to restore their shape.
- Frames Are Too Heavy Or Wide
If you’ve chosen a set of very heavy or wide frames, they may just be too heavy to stay in place. Everyone is different, and your frames may simply be unsuitable for your face shape. You can take a few steps to keep them in place, like purchasing silicone ear hooks or an eyewear retainer, but it may be a good idea to shop around for a new set of frames.
- Oily Skin
Oily skin can cause your frames to slide. To deal with this, we recommend wiping your glasses down daily with lens cleaner. You should also implement a skincare routine to hydrate and nourish your skin. Oily skin tends to be worse when your skin is not properly hydrated.
