A world renowned fashion house today, it was unbelievably only 30 years ago that Dolce and Gabbana first presented their designs to the world using a bed sheet as a curtain.
The Dolce of the high class brand started out in the industry as an assistant in the late 1970’s. With a flair for creating his own innovations in day and night wear, he hooked up with Gabbana both professionally and personally and by 1983 the duo was knee deep in creating their own line.
Based in Italy, it was only natural for Dolce and Gabbana to present their first collection during Milan Fashion Week. Having invested all of their money into the ensembles, they had to rely on friends to serve as models, even using their own accessories to dress up the dresses. Dolce brought in his bed sheet from home to act as a curtain, and it was showtime.
This first collection, suitably titled Real Women, did not fare well but they forged on, opening their own boutique in 1986. Slowly they became recognized, but it was their 4th collection and the “Sicilian Dress” that first got the brand recognized internationally. By 1990 they had entered the realm of men’s fashion and perfume. This proved to be a very profitable move, as their sales were reaching the 500 million dollar mark by the end of the decade.
It was not until 2010 that Dolce and Gabbana began looking at fashion for the eyes, but the impact has been remarkable. Pairing with pop icon Madonna, they have gone on to create innovative and luxurious eye glass frames that incorporate all of the sophisticated elements we associate with the brand.
