Can I Use My FSA Or HSA To Buy Prescription Sunglasses Online?
If you have an FSA (Flexible Spending Account) or HSA (Health Savings Account), you may be wondering if you can spend money from these accounts on prescription sunglasses from an online store like Designer Optics. Let’s explain everything you need to know!
What Is An HSA Or FSA? Explaining The Basics
First, let’s talk about HSAs and FSAs, how they work, and how they differ from each other. Both of these accounts let you save money on your taxes by depositing money that’s used exclusively for health expenses – but they do have some major differences.
-
Flexible Spending Account (FSA) – An FSA is a special account that’s provided by an employer as part of your health benefits. Money can be deposited directly into this account tax-free by you and/or your employer, and used to pay for health expenses. Up to $2,750 can be contributed each year.
This money must be used within the plan year, or it expires. However, your employer can choose to either offer 2.5 extra months to use the money, or “roll over” up to $550 for the next year. Basically, it’s a “use it or lose it” account! You can learn more here.
-
Health Savings Account (HSA) – HSAs require you to be enrolled in a special kind of health care plan called a “High Deductible Health Plan” (HDHP). You or your employer can open an HSA, and either of you can contribute to it.
Up to $3,600 can be deposited by individuals tax-free each year, and used to pay for health expenses. This limit grows to $7,200 if you have a family. The big difference between HSAs and FSAs is that these funds do not expire each year. As long as you are enrolled in an HDHP plan, you can contribute to your HSA, and you can continue to use previously-contributed funds even if you get a different, non-HDHP plan. You Can Use FSA Or HSA Funds To Buy Prescription Glasses Of All Kinds
Wondering if an FSA or HSA is right for you, and if you can use these accounts to buy prescription sunglasses? The answer is “yes!” Both clear prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses are covered by HSAs and FSAs, so you can use funds from your HSA or FSA to purchase these products.
That means FSAs and HSAs are great options if you have vision problems. Not only can you spend FSA and HSA funds on glasses, but you can also spend them on contact lenses and some other vision-related products.

I’m trying to purchase a pair of your Gucci frames using my fsa. I wanted to know were they fsa eligible. And if so how can I get the itemized receipt that they usually ask me to turn in after purchasing to verify fsa eligible transaction. Usually the receipt has the name of business the service provided the date and address and amount.
