Eye Exercises for Healthy Eyes

Updated:

The eyes are the most preferred sense among all sense as it allows us to see the beauty of the universe. In other words, they are your doors to the world. So, keeping them healthy is necessary.

There are almost 198 million vision correction users, and 223.5 million wear non-prescription glasses. With numbers increasing every year, it has become vital to keep your eyes healthy. Just like other muscles, there are exercises for your eyes.

Even if you wear glasses, these eye exercises keep your vision considerably healthy. A few minutes daily to your eyes will relieve dryness, pain, and soreness. Sitting for prolonged periods in front of a screen (even with glasses) can take a toll on your eyes.

When Should Eye Exercises be Done?

Irrespective of your symptoms, you can practice these exercises to strengthen your eyes. If you follow these particular symptoms, practicing eye exercises can be great:

  • Blurred vision
  • Crossed eyes
  • Double vision
  • Acute light sensitivity
  • Tired eyes (eye strain)
  • Lazy eyes
  • Poor binocular vision

If you suffer from the following disorders, these eye exercises may not have any effect on you:

  • Poort sports vision
  • Refractive errors
  • Eye spasms
  • Dyslexia
  • Learning disabilities
  • Intensive blinking

Eye Strengthening Exercises

1. Zoom

Zooming is an effective eye exercise where you zoom the vision on one object, shifting the focus. It doesn’t matter if you are seated or standing. Simply straighten your arm with your thumb pointing upward.

Stare at your thumb, bend the arm, and bring it closer to your eyes. This will keep your eyes focused on the thumb.

2. Rotation

Just like you would rotate your neck and arms to alleviate pain and tension, rotating your eyes will result in relaxation, too. Start by looking at your extreme left. Then slowly move your eyes to the right.

Rotate your eyes clockwise and anti-clockwise as well. This will pump the blood to your eye muscles to keep them healthy.

3. Palm Heat

If you have constant eye strain, this exercise will work best. Rub your palms vigorously to make them warm. Now close your eyes and place your palms on them. Don’t put pressure on the eyes with your palms.

However, keep the palms on your eyes until they turn cold. The warmth from the palms will be absorbed by your eyes, resulting in relaxation. Repeat this exercise two to three times to keep your eyes healthy.

4. Blink

This exercise involves blinking - so make yourself comfortable. Start by blinking your eyes repeatedly (at least 10 to 15 times). After this, keep your eyes closed for 15 to 20 seconds to keep them relaxed.

Throughout the day, practice this exercise 5 times. Plus, blinking more frequently and effortlessly is great for your eyes. Blinking more relaxes the eye muscles and sanitizes and lubricates the eyes with tears.

5. Figure Eight

You will have to sit straight with your legs stretched out for this exercise. Place your left hand on your left knee and stretch your right hand while keeping your elbows straight. Have your thumb pointing out towards the sky.

Concentrate on your thumb without moving your head. Using your thumb, make a figure eight while your eyes stay fixated on the thumb. Repeat this exercise in a clockwise and anti-clockwise direction at least five times (each). Do the same with your left-hand thumb next.

6. Shifting

Shifting involves quick eye movements, forcing your eyes to make small-scale shifts in vision without looking at objects clearly. Your aim shouldn’t be focusing on objects clearly.

Instead, just try to perceive the objects that come in front of your vision. Swift eye-shifting is greatly effective for eyes as it eliminates the threat of vision loss caused by lack of eye motion.

Your eye muscles relax and can be free of strain from this exercise. Individuals suffering from vision problems like nearsightedness, astigmatism, farsightedness, and even squint practice this exercise.

7. Sun Therapy

There isn’t any concrete proof that shows the positive effects of sunlight on closed eyes. However, many people have reported sun therapy’s positive outcomes. You simply need to close your eyes and stand (or sit) under the sun.

The warmth of the sun will eliminate strain and pressure from your eyelids. From time to time, rotate your head side-to-side (in a circle).

Conclusion

Adding these effective and simple eye exercises to your daily routine can keep your eyes healthy and vision safe from defects. These exercises also nourish and comfort the eyes. Even if you wear glasses, you can perform these exercises anytime, anywhere.
