How To Dress For A Day At The Lake – Stay Safe & Comfortable

If you’re going to a lake house or on a boat for a day out on the water, it’s important to make sure that you dress appropriately to protect yourself from the sun and the elements. Wondering what essentials to bring along? Here are a few recommendations from the team at Designer Optics.

1. Wear A Pair Of High-Quality Sunglasses

First, we recommend that you wear a pair of high-quality sunglasses that will block UV rays. Polarized lenses are a great option, since they help minimize glare from the water. Need a new pair of sunglasses? Here are a few recommendations from Designer Optics.

You may also want to bring along a set of “croakies,” which consist of a bungee that helps your sunglasses stay on your head and float if they end up in the water.

2. Bring Along A Hat

We also recommend that you bring a hat to the lake, such as a wide-brimmed sun hat, bucket hat, or even a ballcap. Hats help protect the top of your head from UV radiation and also shade your eyes, face, and neck, depending on the hat. This helps protect you from sunburn.

3. Choose A Comfortable Bathing Suit

You’ll probably want to wear a comfortable bathing suit that dries quickly. Whether you’re hanging out on the dock or in a boat, you’ll probably get in and out of the water frequently, so choose a bathing suit that’s comfortable and won’t cause any chafing.

4. Wear A Shirt Or Cover Up When You’re Not In The Water

A long-sleeved button-down shirt or another cover up is a great thing to bring along to your day at the lake. Sunscreen is all well and good – and you should be applying it liberally throughout the day – but a cover up or long sleeved shirt can block all of the UV radiation from the sun. It’s a good idea to bring some kind of garment to protect yourself from the sun, and wear it whenever you’re not in the water.

5. Wear Sandals That Dry Quickly

Sandals are an obvious choice for footwear. We recommend against leather sandals, though. You should wear plastic or rubber sandals or flip flops that won’t absorb water and will dry out quickly. This ensures you don’t have to worry about walking around with soggy feet!
