DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Arnette Catfish AN4302 sunglasses bring back a 1990s icon for a new generation. Originally a cultural identifier for skaters, surfers, and anyone who went against the grain, the Catfish returns as part of Arnette's 30th anniversary celebration—updated with modern sustainable materials and bold metallic gradient finishes that nod to the brand's graffiti and street culture roots.

A Cult Classic, Reimagined

The original Catfish was a staple on beaches and skateparks throughout the '90s, worn by riders who ripped it up on boards and stages. This AN4302 reinterpretation keeps the signature wraparound oval shape that made the model famous, but adds contemporary touches: gradient metal spray effects inspired by street art, and frames constructed from bio-nylon made with 56% renewable sources like castor oil. You get the same rebellious spirit, now with a reduced environmental footprint.

The full-rim acetate construction uses lightweight propionate and nylon materials that conform to your head shape for a snug, secure fit. The wraparound design minimizes light leakage from the sides—a feature customers consistently mention in reviews. One long-time fan notes they've been wearing Catfish models for years, and the fit remains unmatched for active use.

Built for Action, Ready for Prescriptions

These frames are prescription-ready, so you can add your Rx lenses and get the same wraparound coverage with vision correction. Available in 23 color combinations—from matte black with dark grey polarized lenses to eye-catching yellow frames and metallic silver with mirror finishes—the Catfish adapts to your style. Polarized options cut glare for water sports and driving, while the 62mm lens width (62-16-125 sizing) offers generous coverage without feeling oversized.

The narrow frame fitting is designed for those who want maximum face coverage in a compact package. Customers report the fit works well for medium head sizes, and the wraparound style stays put during movement. At this price point, you're getting Arnette's action sports heritage and a piece of eyewear history—no hype, just a proven design that's been refined over three decades.

Great service!

The service is great. The glasses aren’t made in Italy though. They are made in China.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Arnette Catfish 4302 sunglasses prescription-ready?

Yes, the Arnette Catfish AN4302 frames are prescription-ready. You can add single vision, progressive, or polarized prescription lenses to these frames. The full-rim acetate construction provides a stable base for prescription lens installation, and the 62mm lens width accommodates most prescriptions without distortion.

What is the frame size and fit of the Arnette Catfish 4302?

The Arnette Catfish AN4302 measures 62-16-125 (lens width-bridge-temple length in millimeters), which is considered a large frame size. However, Arnette classifies this as a "narrow fitting," meaning the wraparound design covers a smaller portion of the face while providing maximum side coverage to minimize light leakage. The fit works best for medium head sizes.

Is the Arnette Catfish a reissue of an older model?

Yes, the AN4302 Catfish is a 30th anniversary reinterpretation of the iconic original Catfish model from the 1990s. The original was a cultural identifier in skate and surf culture throughout the '90s. This modern version updates the classic wraparound oval shape with sustainable bio-nylon materials (56% renewable sources) and new metallic gradient color options inspired by graffiti and street art.

What materials are the Arnette Catfish 4302 frames made from?

The Arnette Catfish AN4302 frames are made from injected bio-nylon, a lightweight material composed of 56% renewable sources like castor oil. The frames use a combination of propionate and nylon for durability and flexibility. This sustainable construction reduces environmental impact while maintaining the performance and comfort Arnette is known for.

Do the Arnette Catfish sunglasses come with polarized lenses?

Polarized lenses are available on select Arnette Catfish AN4302 variants. The model comes in 23 different color combinations, and several options include polarized lenses (such as the 275881 Matte Black with Dark Grey Polarized). Polarized lenses reduce glare and improve clarity, making them ideal for water sports, driving, and bright outdoor conditions.

How does the wraparound design of the Catfish perform?

The Arnette Catfish features an ultra-wrapped oval design that provides maximum coverage and minimizes light leakage from the sides. Customer reviews consistently praise the wraparound fit for staying secure during active use and conforming well to head shape. The design is particularly popular for sports and outdoor activities where side light protection and a stable fit are important.

Arnette Catfish 4302 vs. Hot Shot 4182 vs. Fastball 2.0 4242

If you're choosing between Arnette's sport-oriented sunglasses, the decision comes down to heritage versus modern performance features. All three models sit in the $64-$74 price range and offer prescription-ready frames, but they serve slightly different needs.

The Catfish AN4302 stands out for its cultural significance and retro-cool aesthetic. As a 30th anniversary reinterpretation of a '90s icon, it brings authentic skate and surf heritage that the other models can't match. The wraparound oval design has been refined over decades, and long-time customers consistently return to this model. The sustainable bio-nylon construction (56% renewable materials) and metallic gradient finishes give it a contemporary edge while honoring its roots. If you want a piece of eyewear history with proven performance, the Catfish delivers.

The Hot Shot 4182 offers a similar wraparound sport design at a comparable price, making it a solid alternative if the Catfish's specific oval shape doesn't suit your face. It's prescription-ready and available in multiple colors, but lacks the iconic backstory and anniversary edition appeal.

The Fastball 2.0 4242 takes a more modern approach with rubber/silicone grip features for enhanced security during intense activity. Customer reviews note the firm grip prevents slipping, which may appeal to athletes who prioritize function over fashion heritage. However, it doesn't carry the same retro-cool vibe or cultural cachet.

Our take: The Catfish AN4302 is the choice for customers who value authentic heritage, sustainable materials, and a design that's been proven over three decades. The wraparound fit minimizes side light leakage better than most alternatives, and the 23 color options—including polarized variants—offer more variety than the competition. At this price point, you're getting Arnette's most iconic model with modern updates. The Hot Shot and Fastball are fine alternatives, but the Catfish's combination of history, sustainability, and proven performance makes it the standout in this price range.
