The Costa Del Mar Fantail 9006 sunglasses are built for serious anglers who need to see below the surface. As the more compact counterpart to Costa's legendary Blackfin, the Fantail delivers the same performance-driven design in a medium fit that works for average-sized faces and long days on the water.
Costa 580 Lens Technology: See What You've Been Missing
The Fantail's defining feature is Costa's patented 580 lens technology, available in both glass (580G) and polycarbonate (580P) versions. These lenses filter out harsh yellow light at 580 nanometers on the light spectrum, which reduces eye fatigue and enhances reds, greens, and blues for superior color contrast. The result is exceptional clarity when spotting fish in shallow water or identifying structure below the surface. Costa 580G glass lenses offer the best optical clarity and are 20% thinner and 22% lighter than typical polarized glass, while 580P polycarbonate lenses provide maximum impact resistance for active use. Both lens types include Costa's C-Wall coating, which adds scratch resistance and repels water, oil, and sweat for easy cleaning. All lenses provide 100% UV protection and 100% polarization to eliminate reflective glare.
Lightweight, Grippy, Built to Last
The frame is constructed from TR-90 nylon, a durable yet lightweight material that holds its shape through prolonged exposure to sun, saltwater, and UV rays. The Fantail features co-molded construction with Hydrolite rubber lining along the entire interior of the frame—nose pads and temples included. This 360-degree grip system keeps the sunglasses locked in place when you sweat, a feature anglers consistently mention in reviews. The 8-base wrap design hugs the contours of your face and blocks side light, improving your ability to see contrast in the water. Integral stainless steel hinges resist corrosion, and wire core temples add stability throughout the frame.
The Fantail measures 59mm lens width, 14mm bridge, and 127mm temple length, with a frame width of approximately 132mm—a true medium fit. It's prescription-ready, so you can add your Rx to either 580G or 580P lenses. Available in multiple frame colors including Blackout, Matte Black, and Tortoise, with lens options ranging from Gray and Copper to Blue Mirror and Green Mirror.

only comes in one size and i found them to pinch my nose..i'm 220lbs. returning. otherwise, very sweet pair of shades that fit quite closely to the face. feel snug for sporting activities.
Costa Del Mar Fantail 9006 Sunglasses
It was worth the wait.
These were back ordered but still came very quickly! They’re much cheaper than the actual costa website and are same quality! My husband only wears the Fantail frame and recently he became obsessed with the green lens. They’re very clear for in shore fishing. He can see bait and fish swirling under the water!

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Costa Fantail sunglasses prescription-ready?
Yes, the Costa Fantail 9006 is fully prescription-ready. You can order these frames with your prescription in either Costa 580G glass lenses or 580P polycarbonate lenses. Both lens materials support prescription lenses while maintaining Costa's polarization and UV protection technology.
What's the difference between Costa 580G and 580P lenses?
Costa 580G lenses are made of glass and offer the best optical clarity and scratch resistance, while being 20% thinner and 22% lighter than typical polarized glass. Costa 580P lenses are made of polycarbonate, making them lighter and more impact-resistant than glass. Both filter out yellow light at 580nm and provide 100% UV protection and polarization, but glass offers superior clarity while polycarbonate offers superior durability.
What size face do Costa Fantail sunglasses fit?
The Costa Fantail has a medium fit designed for average-sized faces. It features a 59mm lens width, 14mm bridge, and 132mm frame width. While technically a men's frame, it also works well for women who need a medium to large frame. The Fantail is smaller than the Blackfin but offers the same performance features in a more compact design.
How do I clean Costa Fantail sunglasses without scratching the lenses?
Use a microfiber cloth and mild soap solution to clean your Costa Fantail lenses. Never wipe with a shirt, paper towel, or dry fabric, as this introduces micro-abrasions to the lens coatings. Costa's C-Wall coating is designed to repel water, oil, and sweat, but proper cleaning with a microfiber cloth specifically designed for Costa 580 lenses will protect your investment and maintain optical clarity.
What is Costa's warranty on Fantail sunglasses?
Costa Del Mar offers a limited lifetime warranty on Fantail sunglasses that covers defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, scratched lenses, damage from misuse, neglect, or accidents. Costa will repair or replace frames determined to have a manufacturer's defect to get you back on the water as quickly as possible.
How does the Costa Fantail compare to the Blackfin?
The Costa Fantail is the smaller sibling of the Blackfin, offering the same co-molded construction and Hydrolite grip in a more compact frame. The Fantail has a 59mm lens width versus the Blackfin's larger profile, making it better suited for medium-sized faces. Both frames feature the same 8-base wrap design and are available with Costa 580G or 580P lenses, but the Fantail is lighter and less bulky while maintaining excellent side coverage.

Costa Fantail vs. Blackfin vs. Brine: Which Fishing Frame Is Right for You?
The Costa Fantail 9006 sits in the sweet spot of Costa's fishing lineup, but how does it compare to other popular models in our catalog?
Fantail vs. Blackfin: Size Matters
The Costa Blackfin 9014 is the Fantail's bigger brother. Both frames share the same co-molded TR-90 nylon construction, 360-degree Hydrolite grip, and 8-base wrap design. The key difference is size: the Blackfin has wider temples and a larger lens front, making it ideal for bigger faces or anglers who want maximum side coverage to block peripheral light when sight-fishing. However, the Blackfin's larger size also means more weight and bulk. If you have a medium-sized face or prefer a lighter feel, the Fantail delivers the same performance in a more compact package. Both are available with Costa 580G glass or 580P polycarbonate lenses and are prescription-ready.
Fantail vs. Brine: Coverage vs. Weight
The Costa Brine 9017 is another medium-fit option, but with a thinner, more streamlined frame design. The Brine is even lighter than the Fantail and features front-facing vents for improved airflow, making it a great choice if you prioritize a nearly weightless feel. However, the Fantail offers more side coverage thanks to its wider temples and full 360-degree Hydrolite lining, which provides a more secure grip when you're sweating. The Fantail also has a slightly taller lens height (38.8mm vs. 36mm), giving you more vertical coverage. If you spend long hours on the water and need maximum grip and coverage, the Fantail is the better choice. If you want the lightest possible frame, go with the Brine.
Fantail vs. Reefton: Proven Performance
The Costa Reefton 9007 is another full-rim rectangular frame with similar pricing and Costa 580 lens options. While the Reefton offers solid performance, the Fantail has a longer track record among serious anglers and is consistently praised for its fish-spotting ability and comfortable all-day fit. The Fantail's co-molded design and proven medium fit make it a safer bet if you're looking for a frame that's been tested and loved by the fishing community for years.
Our recommendation: The Costa Fantail 9006 is the best all-around choice for anglers with medium-sized faces who want proven performance, excellent grip, and the ability to see fish in the shallows. It balances coverage, weight, and comfort better than any other frame in its class.
