DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Maui Jim KAHUNA MJ162 sunglasses in Gunmetal with Neutral Grey lenses represent one of the brand's most enduring designs—a bestseller for over 15 years that continues to earn loyalty from pilots, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts who demand optical excellence. Named after the Hawaiian word for master craftsman, these rectangular polarized sunglasses combine refined metal construction with Maui Jim's legendary PolarizedPlus2 lens technology.

PolarizedPlus2 Technology: The Lens That Changes Everything

What sets the KAHUNA apart isn't the frame—it's the glass. Maui Jim's proprietary PolarizedPlus2 lenses eliminate 99.9% of glare through three layers of polarization while doing something ordinary polarized sunglasses can't: they enhance color. A patented blend of rare earth elements boosts reds, greens, and blues, delivering richer contrast and depth perception without the flat, washed-out view of standard dark lenses. The Neutral Grey lens option offers the highest available light reduction for bright, direct sunlight while maintaining true color perception—ideal for driving, water sports, and high-glare environments.

The lenses are SuperThin Glass, 20-32% thinner and lighter than standard glass, offering the crispest optics available with superior scratch resistance. Every lens includes anti-reflective coating on the back surface to eliminate bounce-back glare, plus oleophobic treatment that repels water, oil, and sunscreen. All Maui Jim lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB rays and filter harmful high-energy visible (HEV) blue light.

Built to Last: Frame Construction & Fit

The KAHUNA features a double-bridge metal frame in gunmetal finish with a saddle-style crossbar that distributes weight evenly. Silicone nose pads prevent slipping, and anti-corrosive spring hinges flex to accommodate different face shapes and sizes. Reviewers consistently note the fit works well for average to wide faces—one long-time owner noted the frames "fit my head perfectly (and I have a large head)."

"My Kahunas just turned 7 years old and look brand new. I wear them almost everyday." — Zappos customer review

The rectangular shape (61mm lens width, 18mm bridge, 130mm temple) offers excellent coverage without the bulk of wraparound styles. The frames are made in Japan and designed for saltwater environments—corrosion-resistant and built to handle fishing, boating, and beach conditions.

Prescription-Ready Performance

The KAHUNA is available with prescription lenses through Maui Jim's MauiPassport program, which uses digital surfacing technology to maintain the PolarizedPlus2 benefits in single vision or progressive prescriptions. Prescription options include Maui Brilliant (lightest weight), Maui Evolution (high-index for stronger Rx), and polycarbonate materials.

Measurements: 61-18-130mm (lens width-bridge-temple). Full-rim metal construction. Unisex fit. Includes Maui Jim case and cleaning cloth.

HORRIBLE CUSTMER SERVICE

Ripped me off of a phony EXTRA insurance. I paid $15 extra for priority shipping but they sent REGULAR UPS which was FREE. They were suppose to have me sign for it so it would not get stolen here, they said they called. It was miss delivered to the wrong area of the building and was lost for 5 days. I finally found it after 3 days of searching high and low, I got lucky. The box was damaged/opened I filed a dispute with PayPal for a partial refund of the things they ripped me off on. They even had someone call me and lie that they were from UPS. The glasses are fine but a total nightmare in service

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Maui Jim KAHUNA sunglasses available with prescription lenses?

Yes, the KAHUNA MJ162 can be fitted with prescription lenses through Maui Jim's MauiPassport program. Most Maui Jim sunglasses (96% of styles) are prescription-ready and maintain the full PolarizedPlus2 technology in both single vision and progressive prescriptions. Prescription lenses must be ordered through an authorized eye care professional or optical retailer.

What is the difference between Neutral Grey and HCL Bronze lenses on the KAHUNA?

Neutral Grey lenses offer the highest light reduction (ideal for bright, direct sunlight and water/snow glare) while maintaining true color perception. HCL Bronze lenses provide a warm tint with excellent contrast in varied, everyday conditions and are versatile across all seasons and weather. Both are polarized with PolarizedPlus2 technology and block 100% UV.

How do Maui Jim KAHUNA sunglasses fit compared to other brands?

The KAHUNA (61-18-130mm) fits average to wide faces well, with many reviewers noting it's ideal for larger head sizes. The double-bridge metal frame includes spring hinges and adjustable silicone nose pads for a customized fit. The rectangular shape offers good coverage without the wraparound feel of sport-specific frames.

Are the lenses glass or polycarbonate on the KAHUNA MJ162?

The standard KAHUNA lenses are SuperThin Glass—20-32% thinner and lighter than regular glass, offering the crispest optics and best scratch resistance. Glass lenses provide superior optical clarity compared to polycarbonate. Prescription versions can be made in Maui Brilliant (lightweight polymer), Maui Evolution, or polycarbonate depending on your Rx needs.

How long do Maui Jim KAHUNA sunglasses typically last?

Customer reviews consistently report 7-15+ years of daily use with proper care. The glass lenses resist scratching, and the metal frames hold up well to outdoor conditions including saltwater exposure. Maui Jim offers a 2-year warranty against defects and a one-time, one-year scratch warranty on prescription lenses. Many owners report buying replacement pairs after losing (not wearing out) their originals.

What makes PolarizedPlus2 technology different from regular polarized lenses?

PolarizedPlus2 uses three layers of polarization to eliminate 99.9% of glare, but also incorporates rare earth elements that enhance red, green, and blue wavelengths for richer color and contrast. Standard polarized lenses only reduce glare. PolarizedPlus2 also includes anti-reflective coating, oleophobic treatment, 100% UV protection, and HEV blue light filtering—all standard on every Maui Jim lens.

Maui Jim KAHUNA vs. PEAHI vs. BANYANS: Which Rectangle Frame Is Right for You?

All three models feature Maui Jim's renowned PolarizedPlus2 lens technology with 99.9% glare elimination, color enhancement, and 100% UV protection. The choice comes down to frame style, fit, and proven track record.

Choose the KAHUNA MJ162 if you want the most proven design—a 15+ year bestseller with extensive customer reviews documenting 7-15 year lifespans. The double-bridge rectangular frame fits average to wide faces exceptionally well, and the 61mm lens width offers excellent coverage. Customer feedback consistently ranks the KAHUNA among the best for driving, fishing, and all-day wear. The gunmetal finish with Neutral Grey lenses is the classic combination for maximum light reduction in bright conditions.

Choose the PEAHI MJ202 if you prefer a more aviator-inspired aesthetic while keeping the rectangular lens shape. The PEAHI offers a slightly different bridge design and may appeal to those who want a variation on the classic navigator look. It shares the same lens technology and prescription compatibility as the KAHUNA.

Choose the BANYANS MJ412 if you're looking for a rectangular metal frame alternative at a similar price point. The BANYANS provides the same optical performance but with a different frame geometry that may suit different face shapes.

All three are prescription-ready through Maui Jim's MauiPassport program and include the same lens material options (SuperThin Glass, Maui Brilliant, Maui Evolution). For customers prioritizing proven durability and fit for larger faces, the KAHUNA remains the gold standard with the longest track record of satisfied long-term owners.
