DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Maui Jim KAWIKA MJ257 Sunglasses are a retrospective look at one of the brand's original styles—a refined square frame that bridges vintage browline aesthetics with modern lens technology. The crystal-clear frame in the photos showcases a clean, minimalist look, while the tortoise and black variants offer classic versatility. Each features a distinctive metal bridge detail with subtle texture and adjustable silicone nose pads for a secure, comfortable fit.

MauiPure Lenses & PolarizedPlus2 Technology

The KAWIKA features MauiPure lens material—Maui Jim's most popular option that combines optics nearly as crisp as glass with ultra-lightweight construction and excellent scratch and shatter resistance. Every lens is enhanced with patented PolarizedPlus2 technology, which eliminates 99.9% of glare, blocks 100% of harmful UV rays, and uses a blend of three rare earth elements to boost color vibrancy. The result? Reds pop, greens look richer, and blues appear more vivid than through standard polarized lenses.

Available lens options include Blue Hawaii (a blue mirror coating over neutral grey for bright sunlight), HCL Bronze (a warm, high-contrast lens ideal for variable conditions), and Neutral Grey (maximum light reduction for the richest colors). The lenses also feature anti-reflective treatment on the back surface, plus oleophobic and hydrophobic coatings that repel water, oil, and smudges.

Fit, Comfort & Prescription Options

The KAWIKA is designed for small to medium faces and complements oval, heart, and triangular face shapes. The lightweight injected nylon frame keeps weight minimal even during all-day wear, while traditional hinges and adjustable nose pads ensure a customized fit. The refined rectangular shape offers a modern twist on the retro browline trend that became popular in the 1950s and 60s.

These sunglasses are prescription-ready (Rx power range +3.00 to -6.50) and available with bifocal reader options in +1.5, +2.0, and +2.5 magnifications—the bifocal element is nearly undetectable, so no one will know you're wearing readers. Whether you need single-vision prescription lenses or want the convenience of built-in readers for outdoor activities, the KAWIKA adapts to your vision needs.

"Fit tight yet with all day comfort. Nose pads are adjustable. Solid buy." — eBay verified purchaser

From the beach to daily driving, the Maui Jim KAWIKA MJ257 delivers the clarity, protection, and style that have made Maui Jim a favorite among those who refuse to compromise on lens quality.

Super awful customer service

I received the wrong item and I called customer service to get an exchange. The guy was very rude, curt, and unhelpful. Because of this, I asked for my money to be refunded instead of giving you any business at all, regardless of the all of the “restock fees” and extra shipping costs it took. I spent close to $50 to get NOTHING in return for my husband for his birthday gift because of Designer Optics. BUYER BEWARE if you need to exchange or return something!

Lens is loose

I love the glasses but one of the lens is loose and we are full time boaters on our way to The Bahamas so I don’t have time to send them back for repair. If I don’t lose a lens before getting back I will definitely send them in then. They will probably stay in a drawer just to be safe. A little disappointed.

Love glasses BUT

I bot as readers for outdoors. Thought was a true reader NOT bifocal. Hate bifocals. Never mentioned in order that it was bifocal. So wasted money. Not ideal. B

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Maui Jim KAWIKA sunglasses prescription-ready?

Yes, the KAWIKA MJ257 is fully prescription-ready with an Rx power range from +3.00 to -6.50. You can also add bifocal readers in +1.5, +2.0, or +2.5 magnifications. The bifocal element is nearly undetectable, making them perfect for reading outdoors without switching between sunglasses and readers.

What lens material is used in the Maui Jim KAWIKA?

The KAWIKA features MauiPure lens material—Maui Jim's most popular option. MauiPure combines optics almost as crisp as SuperThin Glass with ultra-lightweight construction and excellent scratch and shatter resistance. It's lighter than glass but delivers exceptional clarity, making it ideal for all-day wear.

What face size do Maui Jim KAWIKA sunglasses fit?

The KAWIKA is designed for small to medium faces and complements oval, heart, and triangular face shapes. The frame width is 126mm, making it best suited for those 5'9" or shorter. If you need a larger fit, Maui Jim offers the KAWIKA XL for above-average head sizes.

What is PolarizedPlus2 technology in Maui Jim lenses?

PolarizedPlus2 is Maui Jim's patented lens technology that eliminates 99.9% of glare and blocks 100% of harmful UV rays. It uses a blend of three rare earth elements to enhance color vibrancy—making reds, greens, and blues appear more vivid. The technology also includes anti-reflective coatings and oleophobic treatments that repel water and oil.

What lens color options are available for the KAWIKA?

The KAWIKA is available in three lens colors: Blue Hawaii (blue mirror coating over neutral grey for bright sunlight), HCL Bronze (warm, high-contrast lens for variable everyday conditions), and Neutral Grey (highest light reduction for bright, direct sunlight with rich colors and sharp contrast). Each lens features full PolarizedPlus2 technology.

Are Maui Jim KAWIKA sunglasses comfortable for all-day wear?

Yes, customers consistently report all-day comfort. The lightweight injected nylon frame minimizes weight, while adjustable silicone nose pads prevent slipping. The frame material keeps the sunglasses from sliding forward when you bend over, and the MauiPure lenses are among the lightest available, reducing pressure on your nose and ears during extended wear.

Maui Jim KAWIKA vs. Similar Models

The Maui Jim KAWIKA MJ257 occupies a unique position in Maui Jim's lineup as a heritage-inspired model that bridges vintage browline aesthetics with modern lens technology. If you're considering the KAWIKA, here's how it compares to other popular Maui Jim styles in our collection.

KAWIKA vs. Wiki Wiki MJ246

The Wiki Wiki MJ246 ($260.77) offers a modified aviator shape as an alternative to the KAWIKA's square browline design. While both are designed for small to medium faces and feature PolarizedPlus2 technology, the Wiki Wiki's full-metal construction provides more coverage and a sportier look. However, the metal frame is heavier than the KAWIKA's lightweight injected nylon, and some users report that the temple arms run short. If you prefer the retro browline aesthetic and want the lightest possible frame, the KAWIKA is the better choice. If you need maximum coverage and don't mind a bit more weight, consider the Wiki Wiki.

KAWIKA vs. Red Sands MJ432

The Red Sands MJ432 ($199.23–$238.88) is a budget-friendly alternative that also features a square frame shape and full PolarizedPlus2 technology. While it delivers the same exceptional lens quality, the Red Sands lacks the KAWIKA's distinctive browline design and heritage appeal. If you're drawn to the KAWIKA specifically for its vintage-inspired look and iconic status as one of Maui Jim's original styles, the extra investment is worthwhile. If you simply want a square Maui Jim frame at the lowest price, the Red Sands delivers excellent value.

KAWIKA vs. Castles MJ728

The Castles MJ728 ($260.77) offers a contemporary square design at a slightly higher price point. While both models deliver Maui Jim's signature clarity and protection, the Castles has a more modern aesthetic without the retro browline detailing. Choose the KAWIKA if you want a classic, timeless look that references mid-century design. Choose the Castles if you prefer a cleaner, more contemporary square frame.

Our recommendation: The KAWIKA MJ257 is the best choice for anyone seeking a lightweight, retro-inspired frame with Maui Jim's legendary lens quality. Its heritage design, comfortable fit, and prescription/reader compatibility make it a versatile option that works for both everyday wear and outdoor activities. At $221.72–$292.58, it offers excellent value for a model that's stood the test of time.
