The MODERN TIMES TED Eyeglasses bring practical metal frame construction to everyday prescription eyewear. Built with a full-rim rectangle shape and lightweight metal alloy, these frames suit men looking for dependable, no-fuss eyeglasses that work with most prescriptions.
What sets the TED apart is its cable temple design—curved temple arms that wrap gently around the ears rather than resting straight along the sides. This vintage-inspired feature keeps the frames secure during movement, reducing the constant adjustments that plague standard temples. Spring hinges add flexibility at the connection points, allowing the temples to flex outward for a comfortable fit across different head sizes.
The frame includes adjustable nose pads for a custom fit and comes prescription-ready for single-vision, progressive, or bifocal lenses. Available in three finishes—black, brown, and gunmetal—and two sizes (52mm and 54mm eye width), the TED delivers straightforward functionality at an accessible price point. A solid choice for a backup pair, first-time prescription wearers, or anyone who needs reliable frames without premium pricing.

MODERN TIMES TED Eyeglasses
My order was placed easily and arrived perfectly. I'll being picking up the completed glasses tomorrow!
Used them before and was excited to make another purchase. Delivery address and mailing address are different. Why ask for a delivery address if you aren’t going to deliver there? My frames got shuffled around, back and forth to post offices in different cities. Why? I gave the delivery address as indicated on the purchase form but it didn’t get delivered there! Like my frames but disappointed with service.
The glasses look good and the prescription is correct. However the right lens popped out soon after I got the glasses and I keep having to put it back in. I guess you get what you pay for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these eyeglasses prescription-ready?
Yes, the MODERN TIMES TED frames are fully prescription-ready and compatible with single-vision, progressive, and bifocal lenses. The full-rim metal construction and rectangle shape work well with most prescription strengths. Our licensed opticians can help you select the right lens type and thickness for your specific prescription needs.
What are cable temples and how do they differ from regular temples?
Cable temples are curved temple arms that wrap around the back of your ears, rather than resting straight along the sides of your head. This design provides a more secure fit that prevents the glasses from sliding down your nose during movement. Cable temples are particularly beneficial for active individuals or anyone who struggles with glasses that don't stay in place.
What are the benefits of spring hinges on eyeglasses?
Spring hinges feature a small spring mechanism that allows the temples to flex outward beyond 90 degrees, providing a more comfortable and adaptable fit. This flexibility reduces pressure on the sides of your head, makes the frames more resistant to breaking when you put them on or take them off, and helps the glasses accommodate different head sizes without constant professional adjustments.
What size should I choose - 52mm or 54mm?
The size refers to the lens width (eye size). The 52mm size works best for small to medium faces, while the 54mm suits medium to larger faces. Both sizes have a 19mm bridge width. To determine your best fit, measure your current glasses or consider that most adult frames range from 50-56mm in lens width.
Are metal frames durable enough for daily wear?
Yes, metal frames like the MODERN TIMES TED are highly durable for daily use. Metal alloy frames are known for holding their shape better than plastic alternatives and are typically easier to adjust if needed. The spring hinge construction adds extra durability by reducing stress on the frame when putting glasses on or taking them off.
Can I use these frames for progressive lenses?
Yes, these frames are compatible with progressive lenses. The rectangle shape and adequate vertical lens height provide sufficient space for the progressive lens zones (distance, intermediate, and near vision). The adjustable nose pads also help position the lenses correctly for optimal progressive lens performance.

MODERN TIMES TED vs. Similar Budget Metal Frames
If you're shopping for affordable metal eyeglasses, you'll likely compare the MODERN TIMES TED against other budget-friendly options in our catalog. Here's how it stacks up against similar frames in the under-$60 range.
MODERN TIMES TED vs. Otis & Piper 4000
The Otis & Piper 4000 ($49.70) sits about $16 higher than the TED but offers a similar metal rectangle construction. The key difference is the TED's cable temple design, which provides superior security for active wearers—the curved temples wrap around your ears to prevent slipping. If you need glasses that stay put during movement or physical activity, the TED's cable temples justify the choice despite the slightly lower price. The Otis & Piper may appeal if you prefer traditional straight temples and don't mind the premium.
MODERN TIMES TED vs. Aristar AR16248
The Aristar AR16248 ($47.99-$51.39) represents another budget metal option, but again lacks the TED's distinctive cable temple feature. Aristar brings slightly more brand recognition in the value eyewear space, but the MODERN TIMES TED offers better value at $33.50 with the added benefit of spring hinges and cable temples—features typically found on more expensive frames.
Why Choose the MODERN TIMES TED?
At $33.50, the TED delivers the best combination of price and practical features in this comparison. The cable temples and spring hinges provide functionality that justifies choosing this frame over similarly-priced alternatives. It's an excellent choice for a backup pair, first-time prescription wearers, or anyone who needs dependable frames without spending $100+. The vintage-inspired cable temple design also adds character that standard budget frames lack.
