What's the difference between polycarbonate and Trivex lenses?

Both polycarbonate and Trivex are impact-resistant materials that are significantly stronger than standard plastic, making them excellent for children's eyewear, safety glasses, and active lifestyles. Polycarbonate is the more affordable option and is about 10 times more impact-resistant than CR-39 plastic. Trivex offers slightly better optical clarity, is marginally lighter in weight, and has better scratch resistance, though it typically costs more. Both materials include built-in UV protection and work well for rimless frames. For most people, polycarbonate provides the best balance of protection and value, while Trivex is worth considering if you prioritize the absolute best optics and don't mind the higher price.

Do I need high-index lenses for my prescription?

High-index lenses (1.67 or 1.74) are designed to reduce thickness and weight for stronger prescriptions. If your prescription is above +/- 3.00 diopters, high-index 1.67 will noticeably thin your lenses compared to standard plastic. For prescriptions above +/- 5.00, high-index 1.74 provides the thinnest possible lenses. Lower prescriptions (below +/- 2.00) won't see much benefit from high-index materials and are better served by standard plastic or polycarbonate, which cost less. High-index lenses are particularly valuable if you've chosen larger frames or want to minimize the 'coke bottle' edge thickness that comes with strong prescriptions.

How do Transitions lenses work, and will they darken in my car?

Transitions lenses contain photochromic dyes that react to UV light, causing the lenses to darken outdoors and clear back up indoors. Standard Transitions lenses darken fully in about 30 seconds in bright sunlight and fade back to clear in 2-5 minutes. However, they won't darken significantly inside a car because automotive windshields block most UV rays. If you need lenses that darken while driving, Transitions XTRActive is specifically designed to activate behind windshields. XTRActive lenses also maintain a slight tint indoors (10-20%) and are a good option for people who are light-sensitive.
