DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Costa Del Mar King Tide 8 9111 Sunglasses represent the pinnacle of fishing eyewear—four decades of Costa's innovation distilled into one performance-driven frame. Named for the rare astronomical alignment that creates the year's biggest tides and best fishing, these sunglasses are built for anglers who demand the ultimate advantage on the water.

Costa's Most Advanced Frame Technology

The King Tide 8 features a full 8-base wrap design that hugs your face for maximum coverage and peripheral light blocking—critical for sight fishing. The standout feature is the removable Hydrolite side shields that snap on and off in seconds. On the water, they block stray light from every angle; remove them on land for a sleeker lifestyle look. The shields store in the included hard case, which has dedicated cutouts so you never lose them.

Shark-gill-inspired venting runs along the temples and combines with adjustable vented nose pads to achieve what Costa calls a "near impossible zero-fog effect." Sweat management channels route moisture away from your eyes, while no-skid hooding on the frame top keeps them in place on any surface—wet or dry. Temple tip retainer holes let you attach the included leash system, preventing losses when running rough water. The frame is constructed from Costa's proprietary Bio-Resin, a castor oil-based material that delivers strength without weight.

580G Glass Lens Technology: See What Others Miss

Every King Tide 8 ships with Costa's legendary 580G polarized glass lenses—the same technology that's made Costa the gold standard in fishing optics for over 40 years. Costa's proprietary 580 filter technology selectively blocks harsh yellow light and enhances reds, greens, and blues, delivering exceptional contrast and color definition. The result: you see structure, baitfish, and predators that others simply can't.

The 580G lenses deliver 99.9% polarization efficiency (the highest on the market), 100% UV protection, and filter harmful high-energy blue light. The mirror coatings are encapsulated between layers of glass—not applied to the surface—making them far more scratch-resistant than competitors. Costa's C-Wall coating adds a hydrophobic and oleophobic barrier that sheds water, sweat, and fingerprints instantly.

Available in eight lens options including Blue Mirror, Green Mirror, Copper Silver Mirror, Gray, Sunrise Silver Mirror, and Rose, each optimized for different light conditions and water types.

Prescription-Ready Performance

The King Tide 8 is fully prescription-ready, so you don't have to choose between vision correction and world-class optics. Multiple authorized labs offer Costa 580 prescription lenses in both single-vision and progressive formats.

Who It's For

The King Tide 8 is sized for medium to large faces and fits anglers who prioritize performance over everything else. The full wrap provides more coverage than the King Tide 6 (which has a flatter, West Coast-style 6-base curve). If you're a serious sight fisherman, tournament angler, or simply refuse to compromise on clarity and light management, this is the frame Costa engineered for you.

Includes protective hard case, microfiber cleaning cloth, retention system, and Costa sticker. Backed by Costa's warranty.

Excellent customer service

One star is too much for this company. Horrendous customer service.

I paid for my sunglasses on Jan 30th. The vendor created a shipping label with USPS and never sent my glasses. They are also unresponsive to emails. Furthermore, I paid for shipping protection which is completely useless. I've reported this vendor to the BBB and am disputing the charge for products and services not received. They are running a scam where they sell you a pair of glasses, create a shipping label, then never provide the parcel to USPS. When you call, it's all USPS's fault. Complete garbage.

An example of their scam, here's the tracking for my package. Notice the vendor prints a label and never turns a package over to USPS:

Fishing is gonna be Great this Year

Fantastic Fit. These and my Fantail Pros will be all I need. Sunrise Silver is my lens of choice for inland waters in Northern California.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Costa King Tide 8 sunglasses available with prescription lenses?

Yes, the King Tide 8 is fully prescription-ready and compatible with both single-vision and progressive lenses. You can order them with Costa 580G glass prescription lenses or 580P polycarbonate prescription lenses through authorized optical retailers. The frame accommodates a wide range of prescriptions while maintaining the same performance features.

What is the difference between the King Tide 6 and King Tide 8?

The primary difference is the base curve and wrap. The King Tide 8 features a full 8-base wrap that hugs the face tightly for maximum performance fishing and superior peripheral light blocking. The King Tide 6 has a flatter 6-base curve with a more relaxed West Coast style. The King Tide 8 also has slightly smaller side shields. Functionally, both frames share the same technology—your choice comes down to fit preference and how aggressive a wrap you want.

How do the removable side shields work on the King Tide 8?

The side shields are made from Hydrolite rubber and snap on and off the frame in seconds without tools. They attach to the temples and provide extra coverage by blocking peripheral light—essential for sight fishing. When you're off the water, simply remove them for a sleeker lifestyle look. The included hard case has dedicated storage slots for the shields so you won't lose them.

What does Costa's 580G lens technology do?

Costa 580G lenses filter out harsh yellow light at 580 nanometers and harmful high-energy blue light, while enhancing reds, greens, and blues for superior color contrast and definition. They provide 99.9% polarization efficiency, 100% UV protection, and are 20% thinner and 22% lighter than standard polarized glass. The mirror coatings are encapsulated between glass layers for exceptional scratch resistance, and the C-Wall coating repels water, oil, and sweat.

Do the King Tide 8 sunglasses fog up during fishing?

No, the King Tide 8 is specifically engineered to prevent fogging. It features shark-gill-inspired venting along the temples, adjustable vented nose pads, and sweat management channels that route moisture away from your eyes. Costa describes this as achieving a "near impossible zero-fog effect." Multiple reviewers confirm the ventilation system works exceptionally well even in humid conditions and during intense activity.

What comes included with the Costa King Tide 8 sunglasses?

Each pair includes a large protective hard case with custom cutouts for the sunglasses, side shields, and accessories; a microfiber cleaning cloth; a Costa C-Line Loop retention system (leash) that attaches to the temple tip slots; and Costa decals. The case is designed to keep everything organized so you don't misplace the removable shields or other components.

Read the full comparison

Costa King Tide 8 vs. Fantail vs. Reefton: Which Fishing Sunglasses Are Right for You?

If you're shopping for Costa fishing sunglasses, you've likely narrowed it down to a few top models. The King Tide 8 represents Costa's most advanced technology, but the Fantail 9006 and Reefton 9007 are proven performers at lower price points. Here's how they compare.

Coverage and Light Management

The King Tide 8's defining advantage is its removable Hydrolite side shields. These snap-on shields block peripheral light from every angle—a game-changer for sight fishing when you need to eliminate every bit of glare. Remove them off the water for a cleaner look. Neither the Fantail nor Reefton offers this versatility; they're traditional frames without side coverage.

The King Tide 8 also features shark-gill-inspired venting, adjustable vented nose pads, and sweat management channels engineered to prevent fogging in the most demanding conditions. The Fantail and Reefton have standard Costa construction but lack these advanced ventilation systems.

Lens Technology

All three frames are available with Costa's legendary 580G polarized glass lenses, so you get the same world-class optics, 99.9% polarization efficiency, and 100% UV protection across the board. The difference isn't in lens quality—it's in how the frames manage light around the lenses.

Fit and Style

The King Tide 8 has a full 8-base wrap for maximum coverage and a performance-first aesthetic. It's sized for medium to large faces. The Fantail and Reefton have more traditional rectangular shapes that work well for all-day wear and transition easily from boat to shore to casual settings. If you want a frame that doesn't scream "fishing sunglasses," the Fantail or Reefton may be better lifestyle choices.

Price and Value

The King Tide 8 retails for $359-$382, reflecting four years of R&D and Costa's most advanced frame technology to date. The Fantail ($163-$296) and Reefton ($181-$296) offer significant savings while still delivering Costa's core benefits: 580G lenses, durable construction, and polarized performance.

Our Recommendation

Choose the King Tide 8 if you're a serious angler who spends long days sight fishing, runs in rough water, or simply wants the absolute best light management and fog prevention Costa has ever engineered. The removable side shields and advanced ventilation justify the premium for anyone who depends on their vision to find fish.

Choose the Fantail if you want a proven Costa classic at a lower price point and don't need the extreme coverage of side shields. It's a fantastic all-around fishing frame.

Choose the Reefton if you want Costa 580G optics in a versatile rectangular frame that works equally well for fishing, boating, and everyday wear, and you're looking for the best value in Costa's lineup.
