DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Smith Optics Performance Water 207809 Redding 2 Sunglasses deliver serious optical performance in a low-profile fishing frame. Built for anglers who spend long days scanning the water, these rectangular wraparound sunglasses combine Smith's premium ChromaPop polarized lens technology with a secure, distraction-free fit that stays locked in place from first light to sunset.

ChromaPop Lens Technology for Superior Water Clarity

The Redding 2's ChromaPop lenses filter out color confusion where red, green, and blue wavelengths overlap, helping your brain recognize true colors faster and enhancing contrast so you can spot fish, read current breaks, and see underwater structure with exceptional clarity. Available in both ChromaPop Glass and standard ChromaPop options, these polarized lenses cut glare off the water while the smudge- and moisture-resistant coatings keep your view clear even in spray and humidity.

The ChromaPop Glass lenses are up to 12x more scratch-resistant than polymer lenses and 20% lighter than traditional glass—ideal for anglers who need durability without the weight penalty. For maximum versatility, the Polarchromic lens options combine polarization with photochromic technology that adapts to changing light, shifting from 11% VLT in bright sun to 20-23% VLT in lower light so you can fish dawn to dusk without switching glasses.

Performance Fit Built for the Water

The 8-base wraparound design provides ample coverage and peripheral light protection, while the lightweight Evolve bio-based nylon frame keeps fatigue at bay during all-day wear. Megol nose and temple pads deliver a non-slip grip that holds firm even when you're sweating or wet, and the out-of-sight spring hinges self-adjust to your face for a customized, comfortable fit. The included PivLock leash retainer seamlessly attaches to the frames—a thoughtful detail for keeping your sunglasses secure when you're releasing a fish or leaning over the gunwale.

With a medium-to-large fit and narrow lightweight temples, the Redding 2 balances full coverage with a streamlined profile that won't feel bulky. These sunglasses are prescription-ready, so you can add your Rx and maintain the same optical clarity and glare protection. Whether you're sight-fishing the flats, working a river, or running offshore, the Smith Redding 2 keeps your eyes fresh and your view sharp.

Overall was quite pleased. Was initially set back by the shipping time frame, it was going to take longer than quoted on the site, but alas, stuff happens. When I voiced my concerns, they contacted me my phone (I was on the road and unable to answer) as well as by e-mail. They offered to upgrade my shipping to free 2-day and glasses arrived as promised two days later. Pleased with product quality and customer service. Will purchase in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Smith Redding 2 sunglasses available with prescription lenses?

Yes, the Smith Redding 2 is available as a prescription sunglass. You can order them with prescription ChromaPop polarized lenses to maintain the same glare-cutting performance and color enhancement while correcting your vision. The lightweight wraparound fit and anti-slip pads ensure optical alignment even during active use.

What is the difference between ChromaPop Glass and regular ChromaPop lenses?

ChromaPop Glass lenses are made from optical-grade mineral glass and are up to 12x more scratch-resistant than polycarbonate ChromaPop lenses, making them ideal for fishing and rugged use. Glass lenses also provide superior optical clarity, though they are slightly heavier. Both lens types feature the same ChromaPop color-filtering technology that enhances contrast and natural color.

How do the Polarchromic lenses work on the Redding 2?

ChromaPop Glass Polarchromic lenses combine polarization with photochromic (light-adaptive) technology. They automatically adjust tint based on UV exposure, darkening to 11% VLT in bright sunlight and lightening to 20-23% VLT in lower light conditions. This allows you to fish from dawn to dusk with one pair of sunglasses, adapting to changing conditions on the water.

What size fit do the Smith Redding 2 sunglasses have?

The Redding 2 has a medium-to-large fit with an 8-base wraparound design that provides ample coverage and peripheral light protection. The narrow lightweight temples and self-adjusting spring hinges accommodate a range of face shapes, while Megol nose and temple pads ensure a secure, non-slip fit during active use on the water.

Are the Redding 2 sunglasses good for fishing?

Yes, the Redding 2 is specifically engineered for anglers. The ChromaPop polarized lenses cut glare and enhance underwater visibility, helping you spot fish, read water, and see structure. The wraparound fit blocks peripheral light, the included PivLock leash retainer keeps them secure, and the moisture-resistant coatings handle spray and humidity. Multiple lens options cover different water conditions from low-light to full sun.

What lens colors are best for fishing with the Redding 2?

For fishing, brown and bronze mirror lenses work well in medium to bright conditions and enhance contrast on inshore waters. Blue mirror lenses are ideal for offshore and deep-water fishing in bright, unfiltered sunlight. Green mirror lenses provide excellent contrast in sunny and medium-light environments. Low-light yellow lenses (40% VLT) are best for dawn, dusk, and overcast conditions.

Smith Redding 2 vs Guide's Choice vs Riptide: Which Fishing Sunglasses Are Right for You?

Choosing between Smith's fishing sunglasses comes down to coverage, fit preference, and how you fish. All three models feature ChromaPop polarized lens technology, but they're designed for different priorities.

Redding 2: The Low-Profile Performance Choice

The Redding 2 strikes the sweet spot between coverage and minimalism. Its 8-base wraparound design and medium-to-large fit provide ample protection without the bulk of larger frames. The narrow lightweight temples and low-profile design make these comfortable for all-day wear, and the included PivLock leash retainer is purpose-built for anglers. If you want serious fishing performance in a frame that doesn't scream "fishing sunglasses," the Redding 2 delivers. It's ideal for anglers who fish from boats, wade rivers, or want one versatile pair that transitions from water to everyday use.

Guide's Choice: Maximum Coverage for Serious Anglers

The Guide's Choice is Smith's flagship fishing frame, featuring wider temples and a more aggressive wrap for superior peripheral light blocking. It's the choice for guides, tournament anglers, and anyone who spends full days in unrelenting sun. The larger frame provides maximum coverage, and it's available in the ChromaPop Glass Ignitor lens (40% VLT) for exceptional low-light performance. The tradeoff is size and weight—the Guide's Choice is noticeably larger and heavier on the face, especially with glass lenses. If you prioritize absolute sun protection and don't mind a bigger frame, the Guide's Choice is hard to beat.

Riptide: The Budget-Friendly Active Option

The Riptide offers ChromaPop polarized lenses at a lower entry price ($195 starting), making it a solid choice for recreational anglers or those who want quality optics without premium glass lenses. It's lighter and more versatile for multi-sport use, but lacks fishing-specific features like the PivLock leash retainer and typically doesn't offer glass lens options. If you fish occasionally and want great lenses in a comfortable active frame, the Riptide is excellent value.

Our Recommendation

For dedicated anglers who want the best balance of performance, comfort, and versatility, the Redding 2 is the standout choice. It delivers Guide's Choice-level optics and fishing features in a more streamlined package that's comfortable for all-day wear and versatile enough for off-water use. Opt for ChromaPop Glass lenses for maximum scratch resistance and clarity, or choose Polarchromic lenses if you fish in variable light conditions and want one pair that adapts from dawn to midday.
