Oakley was started by entrepreneur James Jannard in 1975. He originally produced motorcycle accessories, including a pair of goggles released in 1980. In 1984, he developed the Oakley Factory Pilot Eyeshades, a pair of sports sunglasses, and in 1985, the casual Oakley Frogskin sunglasses were released. 

The company grew quickly over the years, going public in 1995 while raising $230 million. The company continued to grow and release new, innovative sports sunglasses, eventually purchasing eyewear manufacturer Oliver Peoples in 2006, and eventually being acquired by Italian eyewear giant Luxottica in 2007.
