DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Costa Del Mar Ferg XL 9012 sunglasses honor the legacy of Costa founder Ray Ferguson in a larger, more inclusive fit. Named after the man who built Costa on a commitment to uncompromising performance, the Ferg XL delivers everything serious anglers and water enthusiasts demand: wider coverage, battle-tested durability, and Costa's color-enhancing 580 polarized lens technology.

Built 5% Larger for Maximum Coverage

The Ferg XL is nearly 5% larger than the original Ferg, designed for those who need more frame or prefer greater facial coverage. The wide fit (142mm frame width, 61.8mm lens width, 48mm lens height) suits larger faces and provides an 8-base wrap that blocks light from every angle. Top hooding and integrated side shields deliver the kind of protection that matters when you're staring into glare all day.

The pillow-shaped full-rim frame is constructed from Bio-Resin nylon—a durable, plant-based acetate that holds its shape in brutal heat, saltwater spray, and everything in between. Textured Hydrolite rubber is integrated into the adjustable nose pads and temple tips; it actually grips better when wet, so the frames stay put when you're sweating or splashed.

Costa 580 Lens Technology: Glass or Polycarbonate

Every pair ships with Costa's 580 polarized lenses, available in both 580G (glass) and 580P (polycarbonate) across 19 frame and lens combinations. The 580 technology filters harmful high-energy visible (HEV) blue light at 580 nanometers, cuts harsh yellow wavelengths, and enhances reds, greens, and blues for superior contrast and definition. All lenses provide 100% UV protection and feature Costa's C-Wall molecular coating for scratch resistance and easy cleaning—it repels water, oil, and sweat.

580G glass lenses deliver the absolute best optical clarity and are truly scratch-proof, plus they're 20% thinner and 22% lighter than typical polarized glass. 580P polycarbonate lenses are lighter still, more impact-resistant, and about $50 less expensive, making them ideal for active use. Both options offer 99.9% polarization efficiency—the highest available.

Prescription-Ready Performance Sunglasses

The Ferg XL is prescription-ready, so you can add your Rx and keep the same 580 lens performance. The fully adjustable, vented nose pads let you dial in optical alignment and airflow to reduce fogging. Whether you're sight-fishing the flats, running offshore, or just need serious sun protection with your prescription, the Ferg XL handles it.

This frame has earned its reputation among anglers who log long days on the water. It's not about style points—it's about seeing fish, cutting glare, and wearing sunglasses that don't quit when conditions get tough.

Costa Del Mar designers must have tiny heads, I've tried them all but are all snug except for Ferg XL, Switch foot, and Rincon. My order of favorites but Rincon get eyebrow greasy. This site has best deal hands down, but shipping is way slow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Costa Ferg and Ferg XL?

The Ferg XL is approximately 5% larger than the original Ferg 9002 model, providing more coverage and a better fit for those with wider faces or higher cheekbones. Both frames share the same performance features—top hooding, side shields, Hydrolite rubber, adjustable nose pads, and Costa 580 lenses—but the XL offers a roomier, XXL fit profile with a 142mm frame width and 61.8mm lens width.

Should I choose 580G glass or 580P polycarbonate lenses for the Ferg XL?

Costa 580G glass lenses offer superior optical clarity and are completely scratch-proof, making them ideal if you prioritize the best possible vision and don't mind slightly more weight. Costa 580P polycarbonate lenses are lighter, more impact-resistant, and typically cost about $50 less—perfect for active anglers or everyday wear. Both provide the same 580 color-enhancement technology, 99.9% polarization efficiency, and 100% UV protection.

Are Costa Ferg XL sunglasses prescription-ready?

Yes, the Costa Ferg XL 9012 is fully prescription-ready. You can add your prescription lenses while keeping Costa's 580 lens technology and polarization. The adjustable nose pads allow for proper optical alignment, and most authorized Costa prescription dealers can customize these frames with your Rx.

What makes Costa 580 lenses different from regular polarized sunglasses?

Costa 580 lenses filter out harmful light at 580 nanometers (HEV blue light) and block harsh yellow wavelengths, which enhances reds, greens, and blues for superior color contrast and definition. They offer 99.9% polarization efficiency—the highest available—and include 100% UVA/UVB/UVC protection. The C-Wall molecular coating adds scratch resistance and repels water, oil, and sweat for clearer vision in tough conditions.

What is the fit profile and sizing of the Costa Ferg XL?

The Ferg XL has a wide, XXL fit profile designed for larger faces or those who prefer maximum coverage. Measurements are: 142mm frame width, 16mm bridge width, 61.8mm lens width, 48mm lens height, and 130mm temple length. It features an 8-base wrap with top hooding and side shields for excellent light blockage, plus fully adjustable nose pads for a customized fit.

What is Hydrolite rubber and why does it matter?

Hydrolite is Costa's proprietary rubber material integrated into the nose pads and temple tips of the Ferg XL. It's designed to increase grip when wet—meaning the frames actually stay more secure when you're sweating or exposed to water spray. This keeps your sunglasses in place during active use and helps maintain optical alignment throughout the day.

Costa Ferg XL vs. Original Ferg: Which Size Is Right for You?

The most common question: should you go with the Ferg XL 9012 or stick with the original Ferg 9002? Both frames share the same DNA—they're named after Costa founder Ray Ferguson and pack identical performance features including top hooding, side shields, Hydrolite rubber, adjustable nose pads, and 580 polarized lenses. The difference is size.

The Ferg XL is 5% larger, with a 142mm frame width and 61.8mm lens width designed for wider faces, higher cheekbones, or anyone who wants maximum coverage. If standard sunglasses feel tight on your temples or don't cover enough of your peripheral vision, the XL solves that. The original Ferg fits medium-sized faces perfectly and weighs slightly less, making it ideal if you don't need the extra room. Both are available in the same 580G glass and 580P polycarbonate lens options, and pricing is nearly identical (the XL typically runs $5-10 more).

Ferg XL vs. Costa Blackfin: Coverage vs. Versatility

The Costa Blackfin 9014 is another best-seller among anglers, but it takes a different design approach. The Blackfin has a more rectangular, aviator-inspired shape with vented frames for airflow, while the Ferg XL leans into maximum coverage with its pillow shape, top hooding, and aggressive side shields. If you prioritize blocking light from every angle—especially for sight-fishing or long days in brutal sun—the Ferg XL is purpose-built for that. The Blackfin offers a slightly more versatile look that transitions from boat to shore more easily. Both deliver Costa's 580 lens performance; your choice comes down to fit preference and how much shielding you want.

Ferg XL vs. Costa Rincon: Pillow vs. Rounded Wrap

The Costa Rincon 9018 shares the Ferg XL's wrap design and water-sport focus but features a rounded lens shape instead of the Ferg's pillow profile. The Rincon is a proven frame with a loyal following, and it's available in standard sizing (the Rinconcito is the smaller version, and there's a Rincondo for even more coverage). If you like the Ferg XL's performance features but prefer a rounder aesthetic, the Rincon is worth trying on. The Ferg XL's top hooding and side shields are more pronounced, giving it an edge in light blockage. Both are priced similarly and available with 580G or 580P lenses, so it often comes down to which frame shape suits your face better.

Bottom line: The Ferg XL is the right choice if you need a wider fit, want maximum coverage with top and side shielding, and prioritize performance over versatility. It's built for anglers and water enthusiasts who spend serious time in the sun and need sunglasses that won't quit.
