DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Costa Del Mar Piper 6003 polarized aviator sunglasses combine performance-grade materials with a refined medium aviator silhouette. Built for anglers, pilots, and outdoor enthusiasts who demand optical clarity and all-day comfort, the Piper features a titanium and beta-titanium frame construction—the lightest and strongest metal combination Costa offers. The 58mm lens width and 14mm bridge deliver a regular fit suited to average-sized faces, while the double-bridge design adds structural integrity without bulk.

Costa 580 Lens Technology: Engineered for Water and Light

Every Piper lens is built around Costa's 580 technology, a multi-patented system designed by light spectrum engineers to solve a problem standard polarized lenses couldn't: harsh yellow light that washes out contrast and fatigues eyes on the water. The 580 filter blocks wavelengths at 580 nanometers, cutting that haze while boosting reds, greens, and blues for sharper definition and truer color. Polarization eliminates horizontal glare from water, wet pavement, and reflective surfaces, and 100% UV protection shields against all UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. High-energy visible (HEV) blue light is also absorbed, reducing long-term eye strain.

The Piper is available with 580G glass lenses or 580P polycarbonate lenses. Glass delivers superior optical clarity and scratch resistance—Costa's LightWave glass is 20% thinner and 22% lighter than average polarized glass. Polycarbonate lenses are lighter still and more impact-resistant, ideal for active use. Both lens types carry Costa's C-Wall scratch-resistant coating and are available in multiple mirror and tint options, from green mirror for inshore fishing to copper silver mirror for variable light.

Titanium Frame Built for the Elements

The frame pairs pure titanium with beta-titanium, an alloy that adds flexibility and shape retention. Beta-titanium's elasticity means the temples can flex outward and return to their original shape without permanent deformation—a real advantage during high-output days. The metal is hypoallergenic, corrosion-resistant, and roughly half the density of stainless steel, keeping the Piper light on your face even during extended wear. Hydrolite rubber nosepads and temple sleeves provide a non-slip grip that holds secure as you sweat or move through spray, and the nosepads are fully adjustable to customize fit and reduce fogging.

The Piper's 6-base curve offers medium coverage and wrap, balancing style with performance. It's a unisex frame that works equally well on the flats, in the cockpit, or around town. The frame is also prescription-ready—most optical labs can fit single-vision or progressive lenses into the Piper, maintaining the 580 polarization and UV protection you'd expect from Costa.

Available in shiny black, shiny gold, satin rose gold, and velvet silver frame finishes, the Costa Del Mar Piper 6003 delivers the optical advantage serious outdoor users need, in a package light enough to forget you're wearing it.

Probably only buying from this site from now on

Covid Shipping delays were going to happen no matter what. It might've been delayed but they came and I couldn't find a better deal anywhere else. Genuine Costas at a fraction of the retail cost. I've ended up buying 3 pairs of sunglasses from this site and I've not been disappointed with the quality yet. It isn't fair to rate them on shipping since no one could foresee the issues with the pandemic. Everytime I called to ask for an update, they responded quickly, and once they were available from their vendor, they arrived in just 2 to 3 days. I love this site. And I plan on buying way more Costas from here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Costa 580 lens technology and how does it work?

Costa 580 technology is a patented lens system that filters light at 580 nanometers on the visible spectrum, blocking harsh yellow light that causes haze and eye fatigue. This filtration enhances reds, greens, and blues for better color contrast and definition. All 580 lenses are polarized to eliminate glare, provide 100% UV protection, and absorb high-energy visible (HEV) blue light. The technology is available in both glass (580G) and polycarbonate (580P) versions.

What's the difference between 580G glass and 580P polycarbonate lenses?

Costa 580G glass lenses offer superior optical clarity and scratch resistance, and are 20% thinner and 22% lighter than average polarized glass. Costa 580P polycarbonate lenses are even lighter and more impact-resistant, making them better for active sports and high-impact situations. Both provide the same 580 color enhancement technology and polarization; glass is preferred for maximum clarity while polycarbonate is chosen for durability and weight.

Can I get prescription lenses in the Costa Piper sunglasses?

Yes, the Costa Piper 6003 is prescription-ready. Most Costa frames can be fitted with prescription lenses in either single-vision or progressive (multifocal) options while maintaining the 580 polarization and UV protection. Prescription lenses are available in both polycarbonate and glass materials depending on your needs and the optical lab you use.

What are the benefits of titanium and beta-titanium frames?

Titanium frames are extremely lightweight (about half the density of stainless steel), hypoallergenic, and highly corrosion-resistant. Beta-titanium is a titanium alloy mixed with elements like aluminum and vanadium that adds superior flexibility and shape retention—the temples can bend and return to their original shape without permanent deformation. This combination makes the Piper both durable and comfortable for all-day wear in harsh outdoor conditions.

What size head does the Costa Piper fit?

The Costa Piper has a regular fit with a large 58mm lens front designed for average-sized heads. It features a 6-base curve with medium coverage and wrap, making it suitable for a broad range of face shapes. The frame includes fully adjustable nosepads to customize the fit. Costa describes it as a unisex medium aviator style that works for both men and women.

What is Hydrolite and why does it matter?

Hydrolite is a proprietary rubber material that Costa uses on the nosepads and temple sleeves of the Piper. It provides a comfortable, non-slip grip that prevents the sunglasses from sliding during sweating, movement, or exposure to water spray. This feature is particularly important for anglers, boaters, and active outdoor users who need their sunglasses to stay in place during critical moments.

Costa Piper vs. Fernandina vs. Grand Catalina: Finding Your Perfect Aviator

If you're choosing between Costa's aviator sunglasses, the decision comes down to fit, frame material, and coverage. The Costa Piper 6003 sits in the middle with a 58mm medium aviator fit and the lightest frame construction Costa offers—titanium and beta-titanium. This makes it the best choice for serious outdoor users who prioritize all-day comfort, flexibility, and corrosion resistance in demanding conditions like saltwater fishing or aviation.

The Costa Fernandina 4007 offers a slightly smaller 57mm aviator at a lower entry price, but uses a heavier Monel metal frame. It's a solid option if you have a narrower face or prefer a more compact aviator, though you'll sacrifice some of the Piper's lightweight feel and frame flexibility. Both share Costa's 580 lens technology and polarization, so optical performance is identical.

The Costa Grand Catalina 9117 steps up to a 59mm large aviator for maximum coverage. If you have a larger head or want more sun protection, the Grand Catalina delivers, but at a higher price point and potentially more weight. The Piper strikes the best balance for most wearers: a regular fit that suits average-sized heads, premium titanium construction that stays light and flexible, and a price that's competitive for the material quality you're getting.

All three frames are prescription-ready and feature Costa's industry-leading 580 lenses. Your choice depends on fit preference and how much you value the Piper's titanium advantage during long days outdoors.
