DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Costa Del Mar Brine Readers solve a problem every angler knows: you need polarized sunglasses to see fish and cut glare, but you also need readers to tie knots, check your phone, or read a chart. These fishing sunglasses with readers combine both in one frame, using Costa's patented C-Mate bifocal technology that adds magnification to the lower portion of the lens—without any visible line separating the bifocal area.

Costa 580P Lens Technology

Every pair features Costa's legendary 580P polarized lenses, engineered to do more than just block glare. The multi-patented 580 technology filters out harsh yellow light at 580 nanometers and blocks harmful high-energy blue (HEV) light, which reduces eye strain and enhances color. Reds, greens, and blues pop naturally, giving you sharper contrast and better definition on the water. All Costa lenses provide 100% UV protection and 100% polarization to eliminate reflected glare from the surface.

The 580P polycarbonate lenses are lightweight and impact-resistant, ideal for active days on the water. Costa's C-Wall molecular bond coating adds scratch resistance and repels water, oil, and sweat for easy cleaning. An anti-reflective coating on the back surface eliminates bounce-back reflections.

Built for Anglers Who Need Readers

The Brine Readers are available in three magnification powers: +1.50, +2.00, and +2.50. The bifocal area sits in the lower third of the lens, so you get full distance vision when looking straight ahead and instant magnification when you glance down to tie a hook, bait a line, or check your fish finder. Because there's no visible bifocal line, nobody will know you're wearing readers.

The frame is built from durable TR-90 nylon, a bio-resin material that's strong, lightweight, and holds its shape under harsh conditions. The medium fit (59mm lens width, 18mm bridge) works well for average-sized faces. An 8-base wrap design provides maximum coverage and helps reduce light leak from the sides, while front-facing vents promote airflow to minimize fogging.

Hydrolite rubber lines the nose pads and temple tips, absorbing sweat and keeping the frames locked in place even when wet. Integral hinges add durability. Available in tortoise or matte black frames with a range of 580P lens colors—copper for variable light and inshore fishing, green mirror for flats, blue mirror for offshore, and gray for everyday use.

These readers are also prescription-ready if you need custom lenses. Whether you're scanning the horizon for birds or threading a 2/0 hook, the Costa Brine Readers keep you covered.

Very smooth transaction. Website indicated that the shipment would be delayed a week due to the holidays. Received an email that the glasses were out of stock but would ship directly from the manufacturer. Received the order 2 weeks after placing even with the known delay.
Will shop here again.
Thanks

Please read before buying!!

The website doesn't explain that they are regular sunglasses with a tiny magnified reader stuck to the bottom of the lens. It's like using a bifocal pair of glasses. I can't use them, but if you can, rock on.

Love them! I need readers to see and I am addicted to sunglasses. These are perfect for both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Costa C-Mate technology and how does it work?

Costa C-Mate technology is a patented bifocal lens system designed for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. It adds magnification power to the lower portion of the lens (available in +1.50, +2.00, or +2.50) without any visible line separating the bifocal area. This allows you to see clearly at distance when looking straight ahead, then instantly magnify close-up tasks like tying knots, reading charts, or checking your phone by simply looking down through the bottom third of the lens.

Are the Costa Brine Readers polarized?

Yes, all Costa Brine Readers feature 100% polarized 580P lenses that eliminate reflected glare from water and other surfaces. The 580 technology also filters out harsh yellow light and blocks harmful high-energy blue light, enhancing color contrast and reducing eye strain. The lenses provide 100% UV protection and include Costa's C-Wall scratch-resistant coating.

What magnification strengths are available for the Brine Readers?

The Costa Brine Readers are available in three magnification powers: +1.50, +2.00, and +2.50. These powers are located in the lower bifocal area of the lens, allowing you to choose the strength that matches your reading needs while maintaining full distance vision through the upper portion of the lens.

What size fit do the Costa Brine Readers have?

The Costa Brine Readers have a medium fit with 59mm lens width and 18mm bridge width. The frame features an 8-base wrap design that provides maximum coverage and helps reduce light leak from the sides. The medium fit works well for average-sized faces, and the wraparound style creates good eye protection from wind and sun.

Can I get prescription lenses in the Costa Brine Readers?

Yes, the Costa Brine Readers are prescription-ready and can be fitted with custom Costa RX lenses according to your ophthalmologist's prescription. This allows you to have both your vision correction and polarized sun protection in one pair of fishing sunglasses, though the C-Mate reader versions come with pre-set bifocal magnification powers rather than custom prescriptions.

What lens colors are best for fishing with the Brine Readers?

Copper lenses (12% VLT) are excellent for variable light conditions and inshore fishing, enhancing contrast in changing light. Green mirror lenses (10% VLT) work great for bright sun on flats and inshore fishing. Blue mirror lenses (10% VLT) are ideal for offshore and open water in bright sun. Gray lenses provide natural color perception and work well as an everyday lens for both land and water activities.

Costa Brine Readers vs. Tuna Alley Readers vs. Fisch Readers

All three of Costa's C-Mate reader sunglasses share the same core technology—580P polarized lenses with patented bifocal magnification and no visible line. The difference comes down to fit, style, and price.

The Brine Readers offer the best value and most versatile fit. With a medium 59mm lens width and 8-base wrap, they work well for average-sized faces and provide excellent coverage without being bulky. The lightweight TR-90 nylon frame with Hydrolite grips stays comfortable all day, and the price point ($189-$237) makes them the most affordable option in Costa's reader lineup. If you want a proven fishing reader that fits most people and won't break the bank, the Brine is your answer.

The Tuna Alley Readers are the choice for larger heads and maximum coverage. The XL fit (62mm lens width) provides more real estate and a sportier rectangular look. They're ideal if the Brine feels too small or you want extra peripheral protection. However, you'll pay more ($227-$248), and some users report the venting system doesn't prevent fogging as well as advertised. One reviewer noted they switched from the Fisch to the Tuna Alley for better fit, though moisture buildup remained an issue.

The Fisch Readers are the premium option but have mixed reviews on fit. Priced higher ($219-$301.75), they offer a different aesthetic, but multiple customers report the frame runs large and the bifocal area can be hard to use without adjusting the glasses. Unless you specifically prefer the Fisch styling and know it fits your face, the Brine or Tuna Alley are safer bets.

Our recommendation: Start with the Brine Readers if you have a medium-sized face and want the best combination of fit, performance, and value. Go with the Tuna Alley if you need a larger fit or want maximum coverage. Skip the Fisch unless you've tried it on and confirmed the fit works for you.
