DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Ray-Ban Square II 1973 sunglasses bring back a bold 1970s silhouette from the brand's historical archive. Part of Ray-Ban's I-Shape collection, these oversized square frames deliver a statement look that balances vintage inspiration with modern wearability.

Oversized Square Acetate Frames

The RB1973 features full-rim acetate construction in an exaggerated square shape that stands out without overwhelming your face. The 53mm lens width provides generous coverage, while the lightweight acetate material keeps them comfortable for all-day wear. Available in 12 color options—from classic black and Havana tortoise to transparent pink, light blue, and violet—many variants pair gradient lenses tone-on-tone with the frame for a cohesive, fashion-forward aesthetic. The single bridge design and 20mm bridge width offer a secure, high-bridge fit.

These frames work particularly well on oval and round face shapes, where the angular geometry adds definition and contrast to softer features. The 140mm temples include the signature Ray-Ban logo, and the full-rim design ensures durability and easy lens replacement if needed down the road.

Prescription-Ready With UV Protection

The Square II 1973 is fully prescription-ready and compatible with single-vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses, making it a versatile choice whether you need vision correction or just want to swap in your preferred lens type. Ray-Ban lenses include 100% UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Select colorways are available with polarized lenses (including the 954/57 Havana with brown polarized glass) to cut glare on water, pavement, and other reflective surfaces.

The 53-20-140 sizing offers a medium fit that suits most adults. Each pair ships with a Ray-Ban case and cleaning cloth.

Poor Customer Service

I ordered a pair of Spy Optics for myself. When I ordered them, their site noted they shipped in 2 to 5 days. Their site still notes that. I just checked. 1 month after ordering them, I still haven't received any sunglasses. I call them and they tell me they're out of stock. They refund me my money and I bought them somewhere else!

The sunglasses I received looked like they had been worn 100 times the arms were so loose and looked used!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Ray-Ban Square II 1973 sunglasses prescription-ready?

Yes, the RB1973 is fully prescription-ready and compatible with single-vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses. The full-rim acetate frame design makes it easy for opticians to install custom prescription lenses, and the 53mm lens width provides enough surface area for most prescriptions, including higher powers with lens thinning options.

What face shapes do the Ray-Ban 1973 Square II sunglasses suit best?

The Square II 1973 works best on oval and round face shapes. The oversized square geometry adds angular definition and contrast to softer facial features. The 53mm lens width and 140mm temple length provide a medium fit that's comfortable on most adults.

Do Ray-Ban 1973 sunglasses have UV protection?

Yes, all Ray-Ban 1973 lenses include 100% UV400 protection to block harmful UVA and UVB rays. Some color variants also offer polarized lenses (such as the 954/57 Havana with brown polarized glass) for additional glare reduction on reflective surfaces like water and pavement.

What is the difference between Ray-Ban 1973 and 1971?

The Ray-Ban 1973 Square II features an acetate frame with a slightly higher arm position and a bolder, more fashion-forward aesthetic, while the 1971 uses a metal frame with a slimmer profile and more classic 70s styling. Both share oversized square lenses, but the 1973 offers more color variety including transparent and gradient options, whereas the 1971 leans toward traditional metal finishes.

What size are the Ray-Ban Square II 1973 frames?

The Ray-Ban RB1973 measures 53mm lens width, 20mm bridge width, and 140mm temple length (53-20-140). This is considered a medium fit suitable for most adults. The oversized square lenses provide generous coverage, and the high-bridge fit works well for a variety of nose shapes.

Are polarized lenses available for the Ray-Ban 1973?

Yes, polarized lenses are available for select Ray-Ban 1973 color variants, including the 954/57 Striped Havana with brown polarized glass lenses. Polarized options reduce glare and eye strain, making them ideal for driving, water activities, and bright outdoor conditions. Replacement polarized lenses are also available if you want to upgrade an existing pair.

Ray-Ban Square II 1973 vs. Square 1971: Acetate or Metal?

Both the Square II 1973 and the Square 1971 draw from Ray-Ban's 1970s archive, offering oversized square lenses that turn heads. The key difference? Frame material and styling approach.

The Square II 1973 uses acetate construction, giving it a bolder, more fashion-forward presence. The arms sit slightly higher on the lenses, and the frame comes in 12 color options—including transparent pink, light blue, violet, and classic Havana—many with tone-on-tone gradient lenses. The acetate material is durable, hypoallergenic, and easy to adjust for a custom fit. If you want a statement piece with color variety and a modern edge, the 1973 delivers.

The Square 1971 opts for metal frames with a slimmer, more minimalist profile. It features adjustable silicone nose pads (a metal-frame advantage), a classic 70s vibe, and availability with iconic green G-15 lenses or Evolve photochromic options. The metal construction is lighter and less visually dominant, making it a better choice if you prefer understated vintage style or plan to wear them for extended periods.

Which should you choose? Go with the 1973 if you want bold acetate frames, more color choices, and a fashion-first aesthetic that adds contrast to round or oval faces. Choose the 1971 if you prefer lightweight metal, adjustable nose pads, and a sleeker take on 70s square geometry. Both are prescription-ready and include 100% UV protection, so it comes down to your style preference and how much presence you want your frames to have.
