My first sport performance/lifestyle sunglasses

I bought Oakley eyejacket in preparation for my upcoming backpacking trip for eye protection. 3 weeks into it I wear it almost everywhere I go. It’s so light and sits on my face so nicely I sometimes forget that I’m wearing it. I got some comments from my family and friends that I look like I’m wearing swimming goggles, but I’m satisfied with my Y2K look.

Yea - I like them

Better prices than anywhere else I saw and I got exactly what I ordered. Can’t complain. Shipping took a 10 days, but I choose the longer shipping option (7 - 10 days). Stoked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Oakley Eyejacket Redux 9438 sunglasses prescription-ready?

Yes, the Oakley Eyejacket Redux 9438 is fully prescription-ready and compatible with Oakley Authentic Prescription Lenses. The frame accommodates single vision and progressive prescription lenses, making it ideal for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who need vision correction. The full-rim design provides excellent lens support for prescription applications.

What is Oakley Prizm lens technology and how does it work?

Oakley Prizm lens technology uses advanced spectral tuning to enhance specific colors while filtering out others, dramatically improving contrast and detail recognition. Developed through 15 years of research using hyperspectral imaging, Prizm lenses are fine-tuned for specific environments and sports—enhancing greens and browns for trail running, or boosting road contrast for cycling. This results in faster reaction times and reduced eye strain compared to traditional tinted lenses.

How does the Eyejacket Redux compare to the original 1994 Eye Jacket?

The Eyejacket Redux maintains the same bold oval silhouette that debuted in 1994 but incorporates modern materials and technologies. It features updated O-Matter frame material for improved durability, Unobtainium grip technology for secure fit, compatibility with Prizm lenses, and High Definition Optics. The Redux has slightly more angular styling compared to the smoother curves of the original, while preserving the iconic wrap-around aesthetic that made the Eye Jacket famous.

What face shapes work best with the Oakley Eyejacket Redux?

The Eyejacket Redux features a rectangular-oval hybrid shape that works particularly well for square and heart-shaped faces. The wrap-around design provides excellent coverage, though some customers note the frame runs narrower and may fit smaller to medium faces best. The bold, distinctive silhouette creates a sporty, retro-futuristic look that some describe as reminiscent of swimming goggles—part of its unique Y2K aesthetic appeal.

What is O-Matter frame material and Unobtainium technology?

O-Matter is Oakley's proprietary lightweight, durable frame material that resists stress and environmental damage while providing all-day comfort. Unobtainium is a hydrophilic synthetic rubber used on the nosepads and temple tips that actually increases grip when exposed to moisture or sweat, ensuring the sunglasses stay securely in place during physical activity. Together, these materials make the Eyejacket Redux ideal for high-performance sports and outdoor use.

Does the Oakley Eyejacket Redux offer full UV protection?

Yes, all Oakley Eyejacket Redux sunglasses feature Plutonite lenses that filter 100% of UVA, UVB, UVC, and harmful blue light up to 400nm. This comprehensive UV protection is built into the lens material itself (not just a coating), ensuring your eyes are fully protected from sun damage during outdoor activities. The lenses also meet or exceed ANSI Z87.1 standards for impact resistance.

Oakley Eyejacket Redux 9438 vs. Similar Performance Sunglasses

Choosing the right Oakley sport sunglasses depends on whether you prioritize heritage style, modern performance, or value. The Eyejacket Redux 9438 stands out as a distinctive retro-futuristic option that bridges '90s nostalgia with today's technology.

Eyejacket Redux vs. Radar EV Path 9208

The Oakley Radar EV Path 9208 represents pure athletic performance with its shield design and interchangeable lens system, making it ideal for serious cyclists and runners who need maximum peripheral vision and quick lens swaps. However, the Eyejacket Redux offers a more versatile aesthetic that transitions seamlessly from trail to street, with its iconic oval silhouette making a bolder style statement. If you want sunglasses that perform like sport eyewear but look distinctive enough for everyday wear, the Redux delivers that balance better than the more utilitarian Radar EV.

Eyejacket Redux vs. Sutro 9406

The Oakley Sutro 9406 is Oakley's modern shield design that's become ubiquitous in cycling and urban sports. While it offers excellent coverage and comes in at a lower price point ($121 vs. $177), it lacks the unique heritage appeal of the Eyejacket Redux. The Redux's oval wrap-around design is far less common, making it the choice for those who want to stand out rather than blend in with the crowd. The Sutro's single-lens shield may feel bulkier on smaller faces, whereas the Redux's dual-lens design provides a more traditional sunglass proportion.

Eyejacket Redux vs. Gascan 9014

The Oakley Gascan 9014 is another Oakley classic with strong heritage credentials and a lower price ($99 vs. $177). While both models appeal to fans of iconic Oakley designs, the Gascan offers a more angular, rectangular aesthetic versus the Redux's distinctive oval shape. The Eyejacket Redux is notably lighter and more comfortable for extended wear thanks to its refined O-Matter construction, and its Y2K-era styling gives it more fashion-forward appeal. Choose the Gascan if you want proven performance at a value price; choose the Redux if you want the most distinctive, conversation-starting design with superior all-day comfort.

Our Recommendation: The Oakley Eyejacket Redux 9438 is the ideal choice for customers who want sport performance technology wrapped in genuinely unique styling. Its 1994 heritage, combined with modern Prizm lens options and prescription compatibility, makes it perfect for athletes and enthusiasts who refuse to compromise on either function or distinctive design. While it sits at a higher price point than the Gascan or Sutro, you're paying for an iconic silhouette that few others will be wearing—plus the exceptional comfort of Oakley's latest materials and grip technology.
