The Costa Del Mar Aleta 9108 sunglasses bring water-ready performance to a round frame designed for women who live for the outdoors. Named after the Spanish word for "fin," the Aleta cuts through glare just as efficiently as a fin cuts through water, making these polarized sunglasses an essential tool for anyone who spends time on or near the water.
Costa 580 Polarized Lens Technology
Every pair of Costa Aleta sunglasses features Costa's renowned 580 lens technology in polycarbonate (580P). These aren't ordinary polarized lenses. Costa 580 lenses filter out harsh yellow light at 580 nanometers on the visible light spectrum, which enhances reds, greens, and blues naturally while boosting contrast and definition. The result is sharper vision with less eye strain, even during long days in bright conditions.
The lenses provide 100% UV protection (UVA/UVB/UVC) and block high-energy visible (HEV) blue light, which can contribute to eye fatigue and long-term damage. Costa's C-Wall coating adds scratch resistance and repels water, oil, and sweat for easy cleaning. With 99.9% polarization efficiency, these lenses eliminate reflective glare from water, sand, and pavement more effectively than standard polarized sunglasses.
Designed for Comfort and Grip
The Aleta frame is constructed from lightweight Bio-Resin, an eco-friendly nylon material that's strong enough to hold its shape in both heat and cold. Double-injected Hydrolite rubber on the temples and vented nose pads creates a secure, non-slip grip that gets tackier when wet—perfect for active days when you're working up a sweat.
The frame's subtle fin-inspired side shields (micro shields) and hooding block excess light from the sides without looking overly technical. Vented nose pads prevent fogging and enhance airflow, keeping you comfortable whether you're sight-fishing at dawn or hiking a trail at midday. The round shape and 54mm lens width suit a variety of face shapes, with many reviewers noting the Aleta fits smaller faces particularly well.
Prescription-Ready and Versatile
The Costa Aleta 9108 is prescription-ready, so you don't have to choose between clear vision and sun protection. Available in multiple frame and lens color combinations—from classic black frames with gray lenses to the distinctive Wahoo pattern with blue mirror lenses—there's an Aleta to match your style and the conditions you fish or play in most often.
Measurements: 54mm lens width, 19mm bridge, 136mm temple length. Full-rim acetate construction with a single bridge and base 6 lens curve.

I don't generally give bad reviews but since they've sent an email to review nearly everyday I assume this is the only way to get the emails to stop. The price wasn't much better than just buying retail but I really liked the glasses so I ordered. I paid an extra 24.99 for expedited 2 day shipping. I got them 3 weeks later. Their excuse was the Passover holiday. I'm Jewish. I can't believe how the world would function if everything closed down for a few weeks. Then I got an email saying they were overnighting them as a courtesy! I got the glasses. Just wouldn't order from them again due to their lack of service.
Not only did I receive my sunglasses quickly BUT at a very fair and reasonable price. I will always look first at Designer Optics in the future for any eyewear I may need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Costa Aleta sunglasses prescription-ready?
Yes, the Costa Del Mar Aleta 9108 sunglasses are prescription-ready and can accommodate single-vision, bifocal, and progressive prescriptions. The frame's design and base 6 curve make it compatible with most prescription ranges, though very high prescriptions should be verified with an optician before ordering.
What is Costa 580 lens technology?
Costa 580 lens technology uses patented multi-layer polarization to filter out harsh yellow light at 580nm on the visible spectrum, which enhances color contrast and definition. The lenses block 100% of UV light and harmful HEV blue light, provide 99.9% polarization efficiency for superior glare reduction, and feature C-Wall coating for scratch resistance and easy cleaning. Available in both glass (580G) for maximum clarity or polycarbonate (580P) for lighter weight and impact resistance.
What does 'Aleta' mean and why is the frame named that?
Aleta is the Spanish word for "fin." Costa named these sunglasses after the fin because of the frame's subtle fin-inspired side shields (micro shields) that block excess light, and because just as a fin cuts through water, the Aleta's polarized lenses cut through glare on the water's surface.
What is the difference between 580G and 580P lenses?
580G lenses are made of glass and offer superior optical clarity and scratch resistance, though they're heavier. 580P lenses are made of polycarbonate, making them lighter, more impact-resistant, and better for active use. Both provide the same 580 color-enhancement technology, 100% UV protection, and polarization. The Aleta 9108 comes with 580P polycarbonate lenses.
How do the Aleta sunglasses fit compared to other Costa women's frames?
The Costa Aleta features a 54mm lens width with a 19mm bridge and 136mm temples, making it a medium-to-large fit in Costa's women's lineup. The round shape and regular fit work well for oval, heart, and square face shapes. Multiple reviewers note the Aleta fits smaller faces particularly well and stays secure without nose guards, thanks to the vented Hydrolite nose pads and temple grips.
What makes the Aleta good for water sports and fishing?
The Aleta is designed specifically for water use with several key features: Costa's 580 polarized lenses eliminate glare from water surfaces, vented Hydrolite nose pads and temples provide a secure grip even when wet, the Bio-Resin frame resists corrosion from saltwater, and the micro shields and hooding block side light and reduce fogging. The lightweight construction and all-day comfort make them ideal for long days on the water.

Costa Del Mar Aleta vs. Other Costa Women's Sunglasses
Choosing between Costa's women's sunglasses often comes down to frame shape, fit, and intended use. The Aleta 9108 sits in the sweet spot between casual everyday style and serious water performance.
Aleta vs. Gannet
Both frames feature Costa's 580 polarized lens technology and water-ready construction, but the Gannet offers a more wraparound, athletic design with greater side coverage. If you need maximum light blocking for serious fishing or high-glare conditions, the Gannet's sportier profile delivers. However, the Aleta's round shape and subtler side shields make it more versatile for everyday wear—you can go from the boat to brunch without looking overly technical. The Aleta also tends to accommodate prescriptions more easily due to its lower base curve.
Aleta vs. Sarasota
The Sarasota offers a different frame shape while maintaining the same core Costa technology. Both are prescription-ready and feature Bio-Resin frames with Hydrolite grips. Your choice here depends largely on face shape and style preference—the Aleta's round lenses suit oval, heart, and square faces particularly well, while the Sarasota may appeal to those who prefer a different silhouette. Both deliver the same glare-cutting performance and UV protection that Costa is known for.
Aleta vs. Rinconcito
The Rinconcito comes in at a lower starting price point while still offering Costa's signature 580 polarized lenses and Bio-Resin construction. The main differences are frame shape and styling details. The Aleta's round design and fin-inspired micro shields give it a distinctive look that's both functional and fashionable, while the Rinconcito may appeal to budget-conscious buyers who want Costa performance in a different aesthetic.
Why Choose the Aleta?
The Costa Del Mar Aleta 9108 stands out for its versatility. The round frame shape is flattering on multiple face shapes, the subtle performance features (micro shields, vented nose pads) don't scream "fishing sunglasses," and the fit works particularly well for smaller faces—a common complaint with many water sport sunglasses. If you want one pair that performs on the water and looks great everywhere else, the Aleta delivers that balance better than most.
