DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Maui Jim ALULU MJ878 Sunglasses bring a fresh take on cat-eye style with a bold silhouette that balances retro glamour and modern edge. Named after the Hawaiian word pronounced "ah-loo-loo," these sunglasses feature exaggerated upturned corners offset by a flat frame bottom—a design that's both distinctive and flattering. The full-rim acetate frames come in three sophisticated colors: Gloss Black, White Tokyo Tortoise, and Dark Tortoise, each paired with premium polarized lenses.

PolarizedPlus2 Lens Technology

What sets Maui Jim apart is the patented PolarizedPlus2 lens technology found in every pair. These lenses don't just darken your view—they eliminate 99.9% of glare, block 100% of harmful UV rays, and enhance color through a proprietary blend of rare earth elements that boost reds, greens, and blues. The ALULU features SuperThin glass lenses, which are 32% thinner and lighter than standard Maui Jim glass while delivering the absolute crispest optics available. SuperThin glass also offers superior scratch and solvent resistance.

The Neutral Grey lens option provides the highest light reduction for rich colors and sharp contrast in bright, direct sunlight, while the HCL Bronze lens offers a warm tint with excellent contrast for varied, everyday conditions. Both are available in SuperThin glass, polarized, and include anti-reflective treatment on the backside to eliminate bounce-back glare, plus an oleophobic coating that repels water, oil, and smudges.

Fit & Prescription Options

With 56mm lenses, a 19mm bridge, and 145mm temples, the ALULU offers a medium fit that works particularly well for those who need a wider frame. The saddle bridge design ensures comfortable all-day wear. These sunglasses are prescription-ready through Maui Jim's MauiPassport program, which uses MauiBrilliant lens material for prescription orders (note: SuperThin glass is not available in prescription). The frames are made in Italy and meet all impact standards, though they're designed for sun protection rather than safety eyewear.

The ALULU delivers crisp, vibrant visuals with a frame that stands out. The cat-eye shape adds a touch of vintage-inspired sophistication, and the combination of premium optics and durable construction makes these sunglasses a reliable choice for daily wear.

Terrible company

Not only did I receive damaged lenses that I paid extra to upgrade, but the company has handled the situation incredibly poorly; it’s been a week and I still do not have a resolution. You have to request approval for returns and they are refusing to honor my request. I will keep fighting with them, the BBB, whoever I have to go to - stay far away from these idiots!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Maui Jim ALULU sunglasses available with prescription lenses?

Yes, the ALULU MJ878 is prescription-ready. However, prescription lenses use Maui Jim's MauiBrilliant lens material rather than the SuperThin glass found in the non-prescription version. MauiBrilliant offers optics nearly as clear as glass at one-third the weight, with excellent scratch and shatter resistance. You'll need to work with an authorized Maui Jim optical retailer to order prescription lenses, as they're considered a medical device.

What is the difference between SuperThin Glass and other Maui Jim lens materials?

SuperThin Glass provides the absolute crispest optics available and is 32% thinner and lighter than standard glass, with the best scratch resistance. MauiBrilliant is Maui Jim's most popular prescription lens material, offering optics nearly as clear as glass at one-third the weight. MauiPure combines optics almost as crisp as SuperThin Glass with ultra-lightweight feel and excellent scratch and shatter resistance.

How do I know if the ALULU will fit my face?

The ALULU features a 56mm lens width, 19mm bridge, and 145mm temples, making it a medium fit. Customer reviews note that these frames are particularly well-suited for wider faces and larger head sizes. The cat-eye shape with its exaggerated upturned corners and flat bottom creates a balanced, flattering look. If you're between sizes, the acetate frames can be adjusted by an optician for a custom fit.

What does PolarizedPlus2 technology do?

PolarizedPlus2 is Maui Jim's patented lens technology that goes beyond basic polarization. It eliminates 99.9% of glare, blocks 100% of UVA and UVB rays, and uses a blend of rare earth elements to enhance color perception—specifically boosting reds, greens, and blues. The lenses also include anti-reflective coating on the backside and an oleophobic treatment that repels water, oil, and fingerprints for easier cleaning.

Can I wear Maui Jim sunglasses in saltwater or while swimming?

Yes, Maui Jim sunglasses are saltwater-safe and corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for beach and water activities. After exposure to saltwater, simply rinse them with filtered tap water and dry with a soft, clean cloth. The oleophobic coating on the lenses also helps water bead up and roll off, making them practical for active outdoor use.

Which lens color should I choose for the ALULU?

The Neutral Grey lens offers the highest light reduction for the richest colors and sharpest contrast, making it ideal for very bright, direct sunlight and water activities. The HCL Bronze lens provides a warm tint with high contrast that's excellent for varied, everyday conditions—it's Maui Jim's most versatile lens color. Both are polarized and feature the same PolarizedPlus2 technology for superior clarity and color enhancement.

Maui Jim ALULU vs. HONI: Which Cat-Eye Is Right for You?

If you're choosing between Maui Jim's cat-eye styles, the decision comes down to fit and aesthetic. The ALULU MJ878 features a bolder, more exaggerated cat-eye silhouette with dramatic upturned corners and a 56mm lens width that's ideal for medium to larger faces. Customer reviews specifically praise the ALULU's generous fit for those who typically need wider frames. The HONI MJ758, on the other hand, offers a more subtle 54mm cat-eye shape that works well for petite to medium faces and comes in at a lower price point.

Both models feature the same exceptional PolarizedPlus2 lens technology with 99.9% glare elimination and 100% UV protection. Both are prescription-ready and offer similar lens color options. The ALULU's SuperThin glass lenses (in non-prescription) provide slightly crisper optics than the HONI's standard lens materials, though the difference is minimal. If you want a statement-making frame with a modern edge and need a wider fit, the ALULU is your choice. If you prefer a classic cat-eye that's more understated and budget-friendly, go with the HONI.

Maui Jim ALULU vs. Prada Catwalk 53SS: Performance vs. Fashion

The Prada Catwalk 53SS and Maui Jim ALULU sit in a similar price range but serve different priorities. Prada brings high-fashion branding and bold, oversized cat-eye styling that makes a strong style statement. However, the ALULU's advantage lies entirely in optical performance. Maui Jim's patented PolarizedPlus2 technology uses rare earth elements to enhance color perception in ways standard polarized lenses simply can't match—you'll see richer reds, greens, and blues with superior clarity.

The ALULU's SuperThin glass lenses are 32% thinner than standard glass while offering the crispest optics available and superior scratch resistance. If you spend time on the water, driving, or in bright outdoor conditions, the ALULU's glare elimination and color enhancement will be immediately noticeable. The Prada excels as a fashion accessory with luxury branding, while the ALULU excels as a high-performance optical instrument that also looks great. For serious sun protection and visual clarity, the Maui Jim is the clear winner.
