DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Maui Jim PU'U KUKUI MJ857 sunglasses bring together refined aviator styling and the brand's legendary optical performance. Named after Pu'u Kukui—the summit peak of Mauna Kahalawai in West Maui's largest private nature preserve—these sunglasses reflect the same purposeful refinement found in Hawaii's thriving ecosystems.

SuperThin Glass Lenses: Optical Clarity at Its Peak

The MJ857 features Maui Jim's SuperThin Glass lenses, delivering the absolute crispest optics available in the brand's lineup. These lenses are 32% thinner and lighter than standard glass while offering superior scratch resistance—a significant advantage for long-term durability. Unlike polycarbonate alternatives, SuperThin Glass provides unmatched visual clarity, though it's worth noting this material is not available for prescription lenses (prescription wearers should consider MauiBrilliant as the closest alternative).

PolarizedPlus2 Technology: See the World Differently

Every pair includes Maui Jim's patented PolarizedPlus2 lens technology, which goes far beyond basic polarization. The lenses eliminate 99.9% of glare and block 100% of harmful UV rays, while a proprietary blend of three rare earth elements enhances reds, greens, and blues for vibrant, saturated color. The result is superior contrast and depth perception in conditions where ordinary sunglasses fall flat. Additional lens treatments include anti-reflective coating on the back surface to eliminate bounce-back glare, plus oleophobic and hydrophobic coatings that make water bead up and roll off.

Lens Options for Different Conditions

The PU'U KUKUI is available in three lens colors. HCL Bronze offers a warm tint with excellent contrast, ideal for variable light from overcast to full sun—it's Maui Jim's most versatile everyday lens. Neutral Grey provides the highest light reduction for bright, direct sunlight, maintaining true color perception with rich contrast. Hawaii Lava adds a striking red mirror coating to the HCL Bronze base for head-turning style with the same high-contrast performance.

Monel Metal Frame: Built to Last

The frame is constructed from Monel metal, a hypoallergenic nickel-copper alloy known for rigidity and corrosion resistance. This material is particularly well-suited for saltwater environments and delivers a sturdy, premium feel. The double-bridge aviator design with squared lens shape offers a modern take on the classic pilot style, with a 58mm lens width, 16mm bridge, and 137mm temples providing a medium universal fit for most face shapes.

These sunglasses are prescription-ready through authorized Maui Jim retailers, though prescription lenses will be made in MauiBrilliant material rather than glass. All Maui Jim sunglasses include a protective case and cleaning cloth.

Love them, but had an issue with the lenses.

I received them quickly and love them, however after wearing them for an hour or so, I realized there were some imperfections on the lenses. I had sent them back with a claim and I’m waiting for a response. Hopefully I can get the lenses replaced and returned soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Maui Jim PU'U KUKUI MJ857 sunglasses available with prescription lenses?

Yes, the PU'U KUKUI MJ857 can be fitted with prescription lenses through authorized Maui Jim eye care professionals. However, prescription versions use MauiBrilliant lens material instead of SuperThin Glass, as glass lenses are not available for prescription. MauiBrilliant offers optics nearly as clear as glass at one-third the weight and is the most popular prescription lens option from Maui Jim.

What is the difference between HCL Bronze and Neutral Grey lenses on the MJ857?

HCL Bronze provides a warm tint with excellent contrast and works well in variable conditions from overcast to full sun, making it ideal for everyday wear. Neutral Grey is darker and offers the highest light reduction for bright, direct sunlight while maintaining true color perception. Bronze enhances contrast more, while Neutral Grey feels cooler and more neutral in full sun.

What makes SuperThin Glass lenses better than other Maui Jim lens materials?

SuperThin Glass provides the absolute crispest optics available from Maui Jim—32% thinner and lighter than standard glass with superior scratch resistance. The glass delivers sharper, more vibrant colors compared to MauiBrilliant or MauiPure materials. However, glass lenses are less impact-resistant than polycarbonate options and are not recommended for high-impact activities.

What size are the Maui Jim PU'U KUKUI MJ857 sunglasses?

The MJ857 has a 58mm lens width, 16mm bridge width, and 137mm temple length, which Maui Jim classifies as a medium universal fit. This square aviator style with double bridge design suits most face shapes and provides comfortable all-day wear for both men and women.

How do I care for Monel metal frames and SuperThin Glass lenses?

Clean the lenses with a microfiber cloth and mild soap with filtered water—avoid harsh chemicals like acetone. Store in the protective case when not in use to prevent scratches. Avoid excessive heat (like car dashboards) which can deteriorate lenses. Monel frames are corrosion-resistant and saltwater safe, but periodic tightening of screws at an authorized retailer helps maintain proper fit.

What does PolarizedPlus2 technology do?

PolarizedPlus2 technology eliminates 99.9% of glare and blocks 100% of harmful UV rays. It uses a patented blend of three rare earth elements to enhance reds, greens, and blues, providing vibrant color and superior contrast. The lenses also include anti-reflective coating, plus oleophobic and hydrophobic treatments for easy cleaning and water resistance.

Maui Jim PU'U KUKUI MJ857 vs. Other Maui Jim Aviators

Choosing between Maui Jim's aviator models often comes down to frame style, materials, and price. The PU'U KUKUI MJ857 sits at the premium end of the aviator lineup with its Monel metal construction and square aviator design, but how does it compare to other popular options?

PU'U KUKUI MJ857 vs. Mavericks MJ264

Both models feature double-bridge aviator styling and the same PolarizedPlus2 lens technology, but the PU'U KUKUI commands a higher price ($314.70–$330 vs. $235.60–$291.54). The key difference is frame construction: the PU'U KUKUI's Monel metal offers superior rigidity and corrosion resistance, making it ideal for saltwater environments and users who prioritize long-term durability. The Mavericks, available in lighter materials, may be more comfortable for extended wear and offers MauiGradient lens options. If you need the most durable frame and plan to wear your sunglasses in harsh conditions, the PU'U KUKUI is worth the investment. For everyday wear with more lens variety, the Mavericks delivers excellent value.

PU'U KUKUI MJ857 vs. Baby Beach MJ245

The Baby Beach represents the classic teardrop aviator, while the PU'U KUKUI offers a modern square aviator interpretation. Both are priced similarly ($260.77–$293.23 for Baby Beach), so the choice comes down to aesthetic preference and face shape compatibility. The PU'U KUKUI's squared lenses and double-bridge design suit angular and square face shapes particularly well, while the Baby Beach's traditional teardrop shape is universally flattering. Both offer the same exceptional PolarizedPlus2 optics and SuperThin Glass options. Choose the PU'U KUKUI if you prefer contemporary styling; opt for Baby Beach if you want the timeless aviator look.

PU'U KUKUI MJ857 vs. Castles MJ728

The Castles MJ728 ($260.77) offers similar premium construction at a lower price point, making it an attractive alternative. Both models deliver the same world-class PolarizedPlus2 technology and UV protection. The decision often comes down to specific fit preferences and subtle design details like temple styling and bridge configuration. The PU'U KUKUI's name and design inspiration from West Maui's summit peak gives it a unique story, while the Castles may offer different sizing that works better for certain face shapes.

Our Recommendation

The Maui Jim PU'U KUKUI MJ857 is the right choice if you want a modern square aviator with premium Monel construction, especially if you spend time near saltwater or need maximum frame durability. The SuperThin Glass lenses deliver the crispest optics in Maui Jim's lineup. However, if budget is a primary concern or you prefer traditional aviator styling, the Mavericks or Baby Beach offer the same exceptional lens technology at lower price points. All three models are prescription-ready through authorized retailers, though prescription lenses will use MauiBrilliant material instead of glass.
