The MODERN KEVIN Eyeglasses bring classic navigator styling to your everyday eyewear at a price that makes sense. These full-rim metal frames feature a distinctive double-bridge design and square-aviator silhouette that's been popular since the 1970s—a bold, modern alternative to traditional teardrop aviators.
Built for Comfort and Durability
Spring hinges are the standout feature here. Unlike rigid hinges that can pinch or snap under pressure, these flex outward when you put the glasses on or take them off, reducing stress on the frame. That flexibility means less breakage and a more forgiving fit, especially if you have a wider face or tend to be rough on your glasses. The temples adjust easily behind your ears, and the saddle bridge with adjustable nose pads helps you dial in a secure, comfortable position.
Available in three finishes—Antique Silver, Gold, and Matte Brown—and four sizes (54mm, 56mm, 58mm, and 60mm eye width), the KEVIN accommodates a wide range of faces and prescriptions. The larger lens height makes these frames a smart choice if you're considering progressive lenses or need extra vertical space for multifocal zones.
Prescription-Ready and Budget-Friendly
Modern Optical has been making affordable eyewear since 1974, and the KEVIN is a great example of their approach: quality materials, functional design, and a price that won't empty your wallet. These frames are prescription-ready and work with single-vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses. The full-rim construction provides maximum lens stability and durability, so your lenses stay secure even with higher prescriptions or thinner lens materials.
If you're looking for dependable everyday frames that won't break the bank—or break when you accidentally sit on them—the MODERN KEVIN delivers exactly that.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the MODERN KEVIN eyeglasses prescription-ready?
Yes, the MODERN KEVIN frames are fully prescription-ready and compatible with single-vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses. The full-rim metal construction provides excellent lens stability, and the generous lens height (especially in the larger sizes) makes them well-suited for progressive prescriptions that require adequate vertical space for distance, intermediate, and reading zones.
What are the benefits of spring hinges on eyeglasses?
Spring hinges allow the temples to flex outward beyond the normal 90-degree angle, which reduces stress on the frame and makes the glasses less likely to break when you put them on or take them off. They provide a more comfortable, forgiving fit—especially helpful for people with wider faces or those who wear glasses all day. The flexible mechanism also helps the frames maintain their shape over time.
What's the difference between navigator and aviator eyeglasses?
Navigator frames have a squarer, more geometric shape with straighter bottom edges and sharper corners, while traditional aviators feature teardrop-shaped lenses that curve inward. The MODERN KEVIN is a navigator style—it maintains the double-bridge design and large lens coverage of aviators but with a bolder, more contemporary square silhouette that became popular in the 1970s.
What sizes are available for the MODERN KEVIN frames?
The MODERN KEVIN is available in four sizes to fit a wide range of faces: 54-18-135mm, 56-18-140mm, 58-18-145mm, and 60-18-150mm. The first number is the lens width, the second is the bridge width (18mm across all sizes), and the third is the temple length. The larger sizes (58mm and 60mm) are particularly good for people who need extra coverage or have wider faces.
Are these frames good for progressive lenses?
Yes, the MODERN KEVIN frames work very well with progressive lenses. The navigator shape provides generous vertical lens height, which is important for progressive prescriptions that need adequate space for the distance, intermediate, and near vision zones. The larger sizes (56mm, 58mm, and 60mm) offer even more vertical depth, making them especially suitable for progressive wearers.
What is Modern Optical known for?
Modern Optical, founded in 1974 and based in Roselle, Illinois, is known for producing fashionable, affordable eyewear designed for budget-conscious consumers. The brand offers value-oriented frames for men, women, and children, with a mission to help families look great while staying within budget. MODERN KEVIN vs. Ray-Ban Aviator 6489: Value vs. Heritage
Both the MODERN KEVIN and the Ray-Ban Aviator 6489 offer double-bridge metal frames with a classic aviator-inspired aesthetic, but they serve different customers. The Ray-Ban carries the prestige of an iconic eyewear brand with a history dating back to the 1930s—you're paying for that heritage, superior materials, and the recognizable logo. The MODERN KEVIN, on the other hand, delivers the same core functionality (prescription-ready metal frames with a navigator shape) at less than a quarter of the price.
The MODERN KEVIN's spring hinges are a practical advantage: they flex outward to reduce breakage and provide a more forgiving fit, a feature not always standard on Ray-Ban's metal frames. You also get four size options (54mm to 60mm), which gives you more flexibility to find the perfect fit. The navigator shape provides excellent vertical lens height for progressive prescriptions.
Choose the Ray-Ban if brand recognition, premium materials, and long-term investment matter to you. Choose the MODERN KEVIN if you want functional, durable eyewear at an accessible price—or if you like having a backup pair without the guilt of spending $200+.
MODERN KEVIN vs. Durango MURRAY: Budget Frame Showdown
When comparing two value-oriented brands, the differences come down to style and features. The MODERN KEVIN's navigator shape is bolder and more contemporary, with a squarer lens silhouette and double-bridge design that draws the eye upward. The spring hinges add durability and comfort, making these frames a smart choice for active wearers or anyone who's hard on their glasses.
The larger lens height on the KEVIN also makes it a better candidate for progressive lenses, where you need adequate vertical space for multiple vision zones. If you're looking for affordable everyday frames that can handle a complex prescription, the MODERN KEVIN offers excellent value and functionality.
