The Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye 0298S Sunglasses bring back a 1968 icon with a bold, modern edge. This square-frame design pays homage to the original Hawkeye while amplifying its presence through thick temples and an oversized profile that commands attention. The signature metal dot rivets on the front are instantly recognizable—a detail that's been part of Ray-Ban's DNA for decades.
Retro Design Meets Contemporary Style
What sets the Mega Hawkeye apart is its two-tone construction. The transparent lower rim contrasts beautifully with the solid upper frame, creating visual depth that changes as light hits the acetate. Available in eight color combinations—from classic black with green lenses to striped Havana with blue tints—each variant offers a different take on the same confident silhouette. The keyhole bridge adds a vintage touch while improving comfort for longer wear.
The full-rim propionate frame measures 53mm lens width, 21mm bridge, and 145mm temples—a medium-to-large fit that works well for average to wider faces. The 44mm lens height provides generous coverage without feeling oversized. Ray-Ban includes 100% UV protection across all lens options, and many variants come with polarized or gradient lenses for enhanced glare reduction.
Prescription-Ready Versatility
These sunglasses are fully prescription-ready, compatible with single vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses. The frame's 6-base curve and full-rim construction make it suitable for most prescriptions, and the propionate material holds up well to the edging process. Whether you need them as everyday sun protection or prescription sunglasses for driving and outdoor activities, the Mega Hawkeye adapts to your vision needs.
The thick temples aren't just a style choice—they add structural integrity and balance the frame's weight distribution. You'll notice the difference when wearing them for extended periods. The square shape flatters round and oval face shapes by adding definition, while the generous coverage suits those who prefer sunglasses that make a statement rather than blend in.

Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye 0298S Sunglasses
My prescription Ray ban glasses arrived unwearable. The arms are either not correct arms or so poorly put on- they would fit no human head- as they absurdly wide. Customer service first suggested taking them to an eye glass center to be repaired. Why would they repair their poor work? Who would pay? After refusing that option- told to mail them back- at my expense. They'll repair them. Who the same workers who sent them in the ridiculous condition they arrived. I requested refund. Answer no. I am contacting Ray Ban and my credit card company for refund.
I love being able to get Ray-Ban quality in a glamorous, modern shape and color. There was a break-in period in which the glasses pressed down on the bridge of my nose but that went away after a day or two. Now, if I wear them for a few hours in a row then I do feel a little pressure above my ears but maybe that will go away soon as well? Regardless, I love the look and can easily make it work!

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye sunglasses prescription-ready?
Yes, the Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye 0298S is fully prescription-ready and compatible with single vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses. The full-rim propionate frame and 6-base curve design work well with most prescriptions. You can add prescription lenses through our lab or order the frame only and have lenses installed by your optician.
What is the difference between the Mega Hawkeye and the original Hawkeye?
The Mega Hawkeye revives the 1968 Hawkeye design with bolder proportions—thicker temples, a more substantial frame profile, and the signature metal dot rivets. It features modern two-tone transparent color options and a larger square shape compared to the vintage original, while preserving the iconic keyhole bridge detail.
What size are the Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye 0298S sunglasses?
The Mega Hawkeye measures 53mm lens width, 21mm bridge width, and 145mm temple length, with a 44mm lens height. This is considered a medium-to-large frame size, ideal for average to wider faces. The frame width from hinge to hinge is approximately 134-138mm, providing generous face coverage.
Do Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye sunglasses have UV protection?
Yes, all Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye 0298S sunglasses include 100% UVA and UVB protection as standard. Many variants also feature polarized lenses for enhanced glare reduction, and some offer gradient tints. The lenses meet Ray-Ban's quality standards for eye protection and optical clarity.
What face shapes work best with the Mega Hawkeye square frames?
The Mega Hawkeye's square shape works particularly well for round and oval face shapes, adding definition and structure. The generous frame size and angular lines help balance softer facial features. Those with wider faces will appreciate the medium-to-large fit, while the keyhole bridge suits various nose shapes.
What material are Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye frames made from?
The Mega Hawkeye frames are made from propionate, a durable plant-based acetate material that's lightweight, hypoallergenic, and holds color well. Propionate is more flexible than standard plastic, making it comfortable for all-day wear and resistant to temperature changes. The material also accepts prescription lenses easily.

Ray-Ban Mega Hawkeye vs. New Wayfarer vs. Mega Wayfarer II
Choosing between Ray-Ban's square and Wayfarer frames comes down to how bold you want to go. The Mega Hawkeye 0298S sits in an interesting middle ground—it's bolder than the New Wayfarer but brings a distinct retro-square identity that sets it apart from the Mega Wayfarer II.
Mega Hawkeye vs. New Wayfarer 2132: The New Wayfarer is the safe choice. It's lighter, more versatile, and easier to style with everything from casual tees to business casual. The temples are thinner, the overall profile is slimmer, and it won't dominate your face. But that's also its limitation—it blends in. The Mega Hawkeye, by contrast, is designed to be noticed. The thick temples and two-tone transparent frames create visual interest from every angle. If you want sunglasses that feel substantial and make a statement, the Mega Hawkeye delivers. The New Wayfarer starts at $117.56, making it more budget-friendly, while the Mega Hawkeye's $148.53 starting price reflects its more complex construction.
Mega Hawkeye vs. Mega Wayfarer II: Both frames embrace the 'Mega' philosophy—thick temples, bold proportions, and unapologetic presence. The difference is shape heritage. The Mega Wayfarer II leans into the classic Wayfarer silhouette that's been a cultural icon since the 1950s. The Mega Hawkeye reaches back to 1968 for its square shape and keyhole bridge, offering a less common alternative. The Hawkeye's metal dot rivets are more prominent, and the square lines add more structure to your face. The Mega Wayfarer II starts at $202, positioning it as a premium option, while the Mega Hawkeye offers similar build quality at a lower entry price.
Our recommendation: If you already own classic Wayfarers and want something different, the Mega Hawkeye is your move. The square shape and 1968 heritage give you a fresh look without abandoning Ray-Ban's retro DNA. For those new to bold frames, the New Wayfarer is a safer starting point—you can always size up to the Mega Hawkeye later. And if you're committed to the Wayfarer shape but want maximum impact, the Mega Wayfarer II is worth the premium.
