The Smith 4D Mag XL Snow Goggles deliver the widest field of view in Smith's lineup, combining the brand's revolutionary BirdsEye Vision lens technology with an oversized XL frame built for larger faces. These premium ski and snowboard goggles feature ChromaPop lens technology for enhanced color definition and terrain recognition, plus the magnetic MAG lens-change system for quick swaps in changing conditions.
BirdsEye Vision: 25% More Field of View
The defining feature of the 4D Mag XL is BirdsEye Vision—a spherical lens that curves downward and inward at the bottom edge, extending below the frame. This design increases your overall field of view by 25% compared to Smith's I/O Mag goggles, particularly improving downward and peripheral visibility. You'll spot terrain changes, wind lips, and other riders in your periphery that you'd miss with standard goggles. The curved lens wraps around your face to minimize frame intrusion, so you see more mountain and less goggle.
ChromaPop Optics and MAG Lens Technology
Smith's ChromaPop lens technology filters the specific wavelengths where blue crosses into green and red crosses into green—the points where your eyes struggle to distinguish color. The result is sharper contrast, more natural color, and better definition in flat light or storm conditions. Each 4D Mag XL includes two ChromaPop lenses (one for bright conditions, one for low light) that swap in seconds using the MAG system. Seven magnetic contact points and dual side-mounted locking levers secure the lens; a simple push releases it for tool-free changes, even with gloves on.
OTG Compatible and Built for All-Day Comfort
The XL frame makes these the only over-the-glasses (OTG) compatible goggles in the 4D family, with temple relief cutouts in the three-layer DriWix face foam to accommodate eyeglasses. The foam wicks moisture away from your face, while the 5X anti-fog inner lens coating delivers advanced fog resistance. AirEvac ventilation integrates with Smith helmets to channel warm air away from the lens. The medium/large fit suits bigger faces, and a Low Bridge Fit version is available for those with lower nose bridges or wider cheekbones. The ultra-wide silicone-backed strap and QuickFit adjustment system keep the goggles secure through deep powder days and high-speed runs. 100% UV protection shields your eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays at altitude.

I tried these goggles in small, regular, and XL and although I don’t have a big face, the XL fit the best . The field of view is unparalleled. The unique curled down bottom edge provides a broader visibility. They are not completely spherical, which I like because even though they’re big, they don’t look huge and bulky and they flush with my Smith helmet perfectly. But aside, Designer Optics really delivered for me. The price was unbeatable and the service was as promised. I also emailed them and got a response within an hour. Very good service. I would use them and recommend them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Smith 4D Mag XL different from the standard 4D Mag?
The 4D Mag XL features an oversized XL frame designed for larger faces and is the only model in the 4D lineup that's OTG (over-the-glasses) compatible, with temple relief cutouts in the face foam. Both models share the same BirdsEye Vision lens technology for 25% increased field of view and the magnetic MAG lens-change system, but the XL provides more interior volume for glasses wearers and those who prefer a roomier fit.
How does the BirdsEye Vision technology improve field of view?
BirdsEye Vision uses a spherical lens that curves downward and inward at the bottom edge, extending below the goggle frame. This design increases overall field of view by 25% compared to Smith's I/O Mag goggles, with the most noticeable improvement in downward and peripheral visibility. The curved lens helps you see terrain directly below you, spot gear adjustments, and track other riders in your periphery.
How easy is it to change lenses on the 4D Mag XL?
The MAG lens-change system uses seven magnetic contact points and dual locking levers mounted on the sides of the frame for quick, tool-free lens swaps. Push the side levers to release the locks, let the magnets disengage, align the new lens, and the magnets snap it into place before you lock it down. Most users report lens changes take just seconds, even with gloves on.
What is ChromaPop lens technology and how does it work?
ChromaPop is Smith's proprietary lens technology that filters specific wavelengths of light where blue crosses into green and red crosses into green—the points where the human eye has trouble distinguishing colors. By blocking these overlapping wavelengths, ChromaPop lenses deliver enhanced color accuracy, sharper contrast, and better terrain definition, especially in flat light or storm conditions. This helps reduce eye fatigue and improves reaction time.
Will the 4D Mag XL fit over my prescription glasses?
Yes, the 4D Mag XL is specifically designed as the only OTG (over-the-glasses) compatible model in Smith's 4D lineup. The XL frame provides extra interior volume, and the face foam includes temple relief cutouts to accommodate eyeglass frames. However, fit depends on your specific glasses size—larger or wider frames may still feel tight. Smith also offers the goggles in a Low Bridge Fit version for different facial structures.
Do the 4D Mag XL goggles fog up easily?
The 4D Mag XL features 5X anti-fog inner lens coating, three-layer DriWix moisture-wicking face foam, and AirEvac ventilation that integrates with Smith helmets for enhanced fog prevention. Most reviewers report excellent fog resistance across multiple seasons of use. However, some users have experienced fogging between the dual lens layers in extreme wet conditions or during high-exertion activities, though this is relatively rare and may indicate a lens defect.

Smith 4D Mag XL vs. Standard 4D Mag vs. I/O Mag XL
Choosing between Smith's premium goggles comes down to fit, field of view, and budget. The 4D Mag XL is the only OTG-compatible option in the 4D family, making it essential for glasses wearers. Its oversized frame also suits riders with larger faces who find the standard 4D Mag too snug. Both share the same BirdsEye Vision lens technology for 25% increased field of view and identical ChromaPop optics, so if you don't need glasses accommodation and have a medium-sized face, the standard 4D Mag delivers the same visual performance in a lower-profile package.
The I/O Mag XL offers a compelling alternative at $70-100 less. You get the same XL frame size, ChromaPop lenses, and MAG magnetic lens-change system, but with a traditional spherical lens instead of BirdsEye Vision. Reviews indicate the I/O Mag XL delivers excellent side-to-side and upward visibility—on par with many oversized goggles—but the lower frame blocks more of your downward view. If you rarely look straight down while riding and want to save money, the I/O Mag XL is a smart choice. However, if you prioritize unobstructed sightlines for technical terrain, moguls, or checking your gear, the 4D Mag XL's enhanced downward visibility justifies the premium.
For budget-focused riders, the Squad Mag ($240-$305) brings the MAG lens-change system and ChromaPop optics to a more accessible price point. The tradeoff is a cylindrical lens design with less optical clarity and a smaller field of view than either spherical option. It's a solid choice for recreational riders who want quick lens swaps without paying for maximum field of view, but serious skiers and snowboarders will notice the difference in peripheral vision and downward sightlines.
Bottom line: The 4D Mag XL is the best choice for glasses wearers, riders with larger faces, and anyone who demands the absolute widest field of view. The standard 4D Mag suits medium faces without glasses. The I/O Mag XL balances performance and value for XL-fit riders who don't need BirdsEye Vision. The Squad Mag is the entry point to Smith's MAG system for budget-conscious buyers.
