DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Smith Optics Overland RX prescription eyeglasses bring a retro aviator silhouette into daily rotation with modern materials and all-day comfort features. These unisex frames blend the classic double-bridge pilot shape with a squared-off geometric lens that works equally well in the office or outdoors.

Bio-Based Evolve™ Frame Technology

Smith builds the Overland from Evolve™ bio-based frame material—a proprietary polymer incorporating 53% renewable, non-GMO castor plant content. The result is a lightweight, durable frame that reduces environmental impact without sacrificing performance. Evolve frames maintain structural integrity through years of wear while keeping weight off your nose and ears during long days.

Engineered for Prescription Comfort

The Overland features QuickFit temples with adjustable wire cores, letting you dial in the perfect fit and relieve pressure points. Megol nose pads and temple tips provide non-slip grip that actually increases when you sweat—ideal if you move between air-conditioned spaces and the outdoors. AutoLock hinges hold the temples open for easy one-handed on-and-off, a small detail that makes a difference dozens of times per day.

The 4-base lens curvature keeps the frame relatively flat for accurate optics and minimal distortion—perfect for single-vision or progressive prescriptions. With a 56mm lens width, 17mm bridge, and 145mm temples, the Overland offers a medium fit with large coverage, suitable for a range of face shapes. The 46mm lens height provides enough vertical space for progressive lens zones.

Prescription-Ready Versatility

These frames accept prescription lenses for single vision, progressive, or bifocal needs. The full-rim construction and aviator shape accommodate higher prescriptions better than many rimless or semi-rimless designs. Available in six colors—Matte Black, Tortoise, Matte Havana, Matte Crystal, Summit Crystal, and Crystal Slate—the Overland adapts to your style while delivering Smith's reputation for quality optics.

Add your prescription lenses and experience the combination of retro aviator style, sustainable frame materials, and adjustable comfort features that make the Smith Overland RX a reliable choice for all-day wear.

Waiting for them to make it right!

Shipping was quick but when I opened the package the frames I received were obviously a damaged product that someone had returned previously. One stem of the eyeglasses was broken off the frame. I communicated the defect the same day I received my order. They sent me a return label and I shipped the product back with instruction if there was a replacement in stock, to please send me a replacement. Otherwise I would take a refund. They received the defective product but I'm still waiting on communication from them as to how they are going to make it right.

What you see is not what you get. . .

I ordered this frame with the intention of keeping clear, non-RX lenses in the frames. The price was significantly lower than buying straight from Smith, but there's a reason for that: when buying from Smith, you choose a lens to drop in. When buying at DesignerOptics, they will send you the frames with "placeholder" lenses, one of which has a huge logo printed on it, rendering them unwearable. Were you to add a clear lens, the cost would be comparable to buying straight from Smith. This was not clear until I received the frames and reached out to customer support. Customer support was courteous, but not particularly helpful. They couldn't just send me lenses. I'd have to return the frames, and have them sent back to me again. That would have worked, but I'm overseas, and the shipping would have cost more than the frames to make this work. Ultimately, I was pretty disappointed with both the end result and the lack of constructive support from the customer team at DesignerOptics. While I appreciate most people would not have this problem, I will not be buying from them again. I actually don't think it would have saved me any money in the end here, and the pain was palpable. I took the whole situation to be a little deceptive, even if it was not intentional. My shipment was also missing the glasses bag inside the case, which was pictured, but not delivered. Bottom line: don't rely on what's pictured?

Cool frames mid experience relative to Smith.

I bought two pairs of frames, one from SMiTH and one from Designer optics. Both were cool. The set had way better accessories, cases, stickers, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Smith Overland eyeglasses suitable for progressive lenses?

Yes, the Smith Overland RX frames work well with progressive lenses. The 46mm lens height provides sufficient vertical space for the distance, intermediate, and reading zones in progressive prescriptions. The 4-base lens curvature (relatively flat) also helps maintain accurate optics across the lens, and the adjustable QuickFit temples let you fine-tune the fit so the progressive zones align properly with your line of sight.

What is Smith Evolve frame material made from?

Smith Evolve™ is a bio-based frame material made from 53% renewable, non-GMO castor plants (using Rilsan® Clear polymer). It's lightweight, durable, and environmentally friendlier than traditional petroleum-based plastics while maintaining the structural integrity needed for prescription eyewear. Smith uses Evolve across many of their eyewear collections as part of their sustainability commitment.

What size face do the Smith Overland frames fit?

The Smith Overland has a medium fit with large coverage. The frame measures 56mm lens width, 17mm bridge width, and 145mm temple length. This sizing works best for medium to larger face shapes. The 17mm bridge is moderately wide, and the Megol nose pads provide grip, though they're molded (not adjustable like metal aviators), so proper bridge fit at purchase is important.

Do the Smith Overland eyeglasses have adjustable nose pads?

The Smith Overland features molded Megol nose pads that are not independently adjustable like metal aviator frames. However, the QuickFit temples have adjustable wire cores that let you customize the fit and temple pressure. The Megol material provides excellent non-slip grip and actually increases traction when exposed to moisture or sweat.

Can I use the Smith Overland frames for both prescription glasses and sunglasses?

The Smith Overland RX is designed as a prescription eyeglass frame and comes with clear demo lenses. While you can have your optician install prescription sun lenses (tinted or photochromic), these frames are optimized for everyday optical wear rather than performance sun use. Smith offers separate sunglass models if you need dedicated sun protection with features like ChromaPop lens technology.

What is the difference between the Smith Overland and other Smith RX frames like the Pacer or Seeker?

The Smith Overland features a double-bridge aviator design with a squared geometric lens shape, while the Pacer and Seeker have different frame geometries. All three share Smith's Evolve bio-based frame material, QuickFit adjustable temples, Megol grips, and AutoLock hinges. The main differences are in frame shape and style—the Overland's retro aviator look appeals to those wanting a classic pilot-inspired aesthetic for everyday wear.

Smith Overland vs. Pacer vs. Seeker: Choosing Your Smith RX Frame

Smith's prescription eyeglass collection includes several models at the $154 price point, all sharing the same core technology: bio-based Evolve™ frames, QuickFit adjustable temples, Megol non-slip grips, and AutoLock hinges. The Overland, Pacer, and Seeker differ primarily in frame shape and aesthetic, making your choice about style preference and face-shape compatibility rather than features or quality.

Why Choose the Overland?

The Smith Overland RX is the right choice if you want a retro aviator aesthetic with a double-bridge design. The squared-off geometric lens shape gives a modern twist to the classic pilot frame, and the 56-17-145mm sizing offers medium fit with large coverage. If you're drawn to aviator or navigator styles and want that recognizable double-bridge look for everyday wear, the Overland delivers it with Smith's premium materials and adjustability.

Pacer and Seeker Alternatives

The Smith Pacer RX and Seeker RX offer different frame geometries while maintaining all the same technology and build quality. If the aviator shape doesn't suit your face or style, these alternatives provide the same bio-based construction, adjustable fit, and all-day comfort in different silhouettes. All three frames are prescription-ready for single vision, progressive, or bifocal lenses.

Since all three share the same $154 price, the decision comes down to which frame shape complements your face and matches your personal style. The Overland's double-bridge aviator design stands out for those seeking a retro-inspired, pilot-style look that works from the office to the outdoors.
