DESCRIPTION RATINGS & REVIEWS PRESCRIPTION GUIDE

The Smith Embark sunglasses deliver serious alpine protection in a surprisingly versatile package. Built for glacier travel, high-elevation summits, and spring snowfields, these square-frame glacier glasses handle harsh mountain conditions while looking sharp enough for everyday wear—just pop off the removable side shields and you're ready for town.

ChromaPop Lens Technology: See Every Detail

Smith's proprietary ChromaPop lens technology filters out the specific wavelengths where blue bleeds into green and green bleeds into red—the two spots where your eyes lose track of color. The result is genuinely enhanced contrast and definition that helps you spot terrain features, crevasses, and wind drifts with clarity that standard lenses can't match. Available in both ChromaPop Polarized (cuts glare from snow, water, and reflective surfaces) and ChromaPop Glacier Photochromic options (automatically adjusts from 45% to 7% light transmission based on UV and visible light, with less temperature sensitivity than traditional photochromic lenses), you get exceptional optical performance across changing conditions.

The lenses feature anti-fog and hydroleophobic coatings for clear optics and easy cleaning, plus 100% UV protection. Reviewers consistently note the brightness and sharpness—one alpine guide described the view as "crisp and clear with enhanced colour and contrast."

Removable Side Shields & Mountain-Ready Features

The removable, ventilated TPU side shields block peripheral glare and wind without creating a fogging problem—a critical detail when you're skinning uphill or navigating exposed ridges. AutoLock hinges snap open for easy one-handed on-and-off (essential when you're holding trekking poles or ice tools), and the adjustable QuickFit temple arms let you dial in a custom fit. Megol nose pads and temple grips keep the frames secure even when you're sweating. An optional goggle-inspired retainer strap adds security during technical ascents and high-speed descents.

The frames are made from Evolve bio-based material—lightweight, durable, and eco-conscious. At just 29 grams, they nearly disappear on your face during all-day wear. The 6-base lens curvature offers a modest wraparound fit (medium fit, large coverage) that balances protection with a less aggressive look than full-wrap sport shields.

Built for Versatility

What sets the Embark apart in Smith's glacier glasses lineup is its adaptability. The Venture is more compact with a removable nose piece; the Pursuit is oversized and goggle-like. The Embark meets them in the middle—substantial enough for serious alpine use, but refined enough that you won't look out of place wearing them around town. Owners report using them for mountaineering, backcountry skiing, trail running, mountain biking, fishing, and daily driving.

The Embark is prescription-ready through Smith's RX program and third-party optical retailers, making it a practical choice if you need corrective lenses. Comes with a hard case and microfiber sleeve.

These sunglasses are the best I have ever owned. They are light weight glass lenses so highly scratch resistant, They are polarized and photochromic I can wear them all day without fatigue and they stay put on my nose. Can't ask for any more.

Very poor experience. Never received goods.

After waiting nearly 3 weeks for my delivery to arrive, the company shipped my order DHL to be delivered by the US postal Service. Tracking showed that it was delivered to a "package locker" and not my address as specified on the shipping instructions. The company wanted me to file a police report before they would help me further. Avoid doing business with this company at all costs, I ended up having to reverse credit card charges to avoid losing my money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Smith Embark sunglasses prescription-ready?

Yes, the Smith Embark is available with prescription lenses through Smith's Embark RX program and authorized optical retailers. The prescription version features the same ChromaPop polarized lenses with anti-reflective and smudge-resistant coatings. You can order single-vision or progressive lenses, and the frames are compatible with most prescriptions.

What is ChromaPop lens technology and how does it work?

ChromaPop is Smith's proprietary lens technology that filters out specific wavelengths of light (around 480nm and 580nm) where blue/green and green/red colors overlap, causing confusion for the human eye. By blocking these crossover points, ChromaPop lenses deliver sharper color definition, enhanced contrast, and reduced eye fatigue—helping you see terrain features, obstacles, and changing conditions more clearly than standard lenses.

What are the removable side shields for on the Smith Embark?

The removable, ventilated TPU side shields block peripheral light, wind, snow, and glare from the sides—critical protection for glacier travel, high-altitude mountaineering, and backcountry skiing where reflective light comes from all angles. The shields are perforated for ventilation to reduce fogging. You can easily remove them when you're off the mountain to transform the Embark into everyday sunglasses.

What's the difference between ChromaPop Polarized and ChromaPop Glacier Photochromic lenses?

ChromaPop Polarized lenses have a fixed tint and cut glare from reflective surfaces like snow, water, and asphalt—ideal for bright, consistent conditions. ChromaPop Glacier Photochromic lenses automatically adjust their tint from 45% to 7% light transmission based on UV and visible light exposure, adapting to changing conditions with less temperature sensitivity than traditional photochromic lenses. Both versions include the ChromaPop color-enhancement technology throughout the full tint range.

How do the Smith Embark sunglasses fit compared to other Smith glacier glasses?

The Embark has a medium fit with large coverage, sitting between the compact Venture and the oversized, goggle-like Pursuit in Smith's glacier glasses lineup. The 58mm lens width and 6-base curvature offer a modest wraparound fit that provides substantial protection without an overly aggressive look. The adjustable QuickFit temples and Megol nose pads let you customize the fit for all-day comfort.

Can I wear the Smith Embark for activities other than mountaineering?

Absolutely. The Embark's versatility is one of its standout features. With the side shields removed, they function as stylish everyday sunglasses. Owners report using them for trail running, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, water sports, and casual wear. The lightweight Evolve bio-based frames (just 29 grams) and ChromaPop lenses make them comfortable for all-day use across a wide range of activities.

Smith Embark vs. Venture vs. Bobcat: Which Smith Sunglasses Are Right for You?

Smith offers several performance sunglasses in the $200-$300 range, each designed for different activities and preferences. Here's how the Embark compares to other popular Smith models in our collection.

Smith Embark vs. Smith Venture: Glacier Glasses Showdown

Both the Embark and Venture are glacier glasses designed for alpine conditions with ChromaPop lenses and removable side shields, but they differ in fit and features. The Embark offers a medium fit with large coverage—it's the middle ground in Smith's glacier lineup, balancing substantial protection with everyday wearability. The square frame design and 58mm lens width work well for medium to larger faces.

The Venture is more compact with a round flat lens design and includes a removable nose piece that seals gaps around your nose to prevent cold wind infiltration and fogging—a feature the Embark doesn't have. This makes the Venture the top choice for extreme cold and technical mountaineering where every seal matters. However, the Embark's less technical appearance makes it more versatile for casual wear when you remove the shields.

Choose the Embark if: You want glacier glasses that can double as everyday sunglasses, prefer a square frame aesthetic, or have a medium to larger face. The Embark's balanced design makes it the most versatile option.

Choose the Venture if: You prioritize maximum sealing for extreme cold, prefer a compact fit, or have a smaller face. The removable nose piece gives the Venture an edge in harsh alpine conditions.

Smith Embark vs. Smith Bobcat: Alpine vs. Sport Performance

The Bobcat represents a completely different approach—it's a shield lens performance sunglasses designed for cycling, running, and high-speed sports rather than alpine use. While both feature ChromaPop lenses in a similar price range, the Bobcat's single-piece shield lens offers maximum aerodynamic coverage and ventilation for high-output activities.

The Embark's advantage is versatility and adaptability. Remove the side shields and you have stylish everyday sunglasses; attach them and you're ready for glacier travel. The Bobcat is purpose-built for sport and doesn't transition well to casual use. The Embark also provides better peripheral protection from wind and glare when the shields are attached.

Choose the Embark if: You need sunglasses for alpine activities, want the option to remove shields for everyday wear, or prefer a traditional frame style over a shield lens.

Choose the Bobcat if: Your primary activities are cycling, running, or other high-speed sports where aerodynamics and ventilation matter more than versatility.

Smith Embark vs. Smith Wildcat: Traditional vs. Aggressive

The Wildcat is Smith's oversized shield performance sunglasses—maximum coverage, aggressive styling, and optimized for cycling and running. It's the opposite end of the spectrum from the Embark's adaptable glacier glasses design.

While the Wildcat offers ultimate coverage for high-speed sports, it's a one-trick pony compared to the Embark. You can't remove parts to make it casual-friendly, and the large shield lens is overkill for most alpine use. The Embark's removable shields, traditional frame construction, and lighter weight (29g) make it far more practical for multi-use scenarios.

Choose the Embark if: You value versatility, need alpine-specific features like removable side shields, or want sunglasses that work for both mountain adventures and everyday life.

Choose the Wildcat if: You're a dedicated cyclist or runner who wants maximum coverage and doesn't care about using the same sunglasses off the bike or trail.

The Bottom Line

The Smith Embark stands out as the most versatile option in this comparison. Its removable side shields, medium fit, ChromaPop lens technology, and lightweight construction make it equally capable on glaciers, trails, and city streets. If you want one pair of sunglasses that can handle serious alpine conditions and still look good at the coffee shop, the Embark is your best bet.
